My humble advice Never think myLot is a place where you learn good English

Users who are keen on improving their English feel native speakers here will help them. Think again. They make the most mistakes here both in grammar and spelling.Let me hasten to add. There are some though who are excellent but you will not know who is right and who is wrong since you are a learner. There are great sources on the Net that will help you reach your goal. No I will not spoon feed you. Search the Net and you will find them. Good Luck

You are so right, some "native speaking" made me doubt that I was wrong writing some sentences, while it is not the case. It is not because you speak your native language that you necessarily have a good vocabulary and a correct grammar.

Those who are weak in English and who want to learn it here, blindly assume Native speakers are good in the language. The sad part is this category will not even know who writes good English and who does not

I do not think my English is perfect in here but I think I can convey well my thoughts even English is my second language. I know I still have my flaws here and there and sometimes mood can interfere with writing a good commentary or a post in here. But so far Mylot serves as a ground for me to write in English the best I can.

@allknowing I do not intend on writing perfect English tenses here since I am not a native English writer here. What is important for me in here is that I can convey my ideas to many as much as possible.

Many native speakers make mistakes when they write English. The same thing happens in other languages. I often see Danish sentences full of mistakes. Those sentences were written by native speakers, not by immigrants who live here. It is important to keep that in mind when we are trying to learn another language. If we copy the things native speakers do we might copy mistakes instead of learning new things.

Oh yes, you are so right!! Every time I come to myLot, my red pen opens automatically. I would have got hysterical fits if my pupils had made the mistakes I see here made by native speakers of English. there/they're/their (to mention just one example).

@MALUSE Native speakers start learning phonetically and there lies the fault

@allknowing If that were the case, nobody would need lessons at school in their native language. Once, a German pupil I taught in English wrote 'I', the first person personal pronoun with a small letter, namely 'i'. I gave him a full mistake. (We also have half mistakes for simple typos). He started arguing with me. He told me that he had seen that very often written by native speakers of English and what was on the net was certainly more correct than what I had to said. I said if you are convinced that what native speakers write is always correct, we can put a German test of yours on the net. There are certainly many people who want to learn German. They will be grateful for an original text by a German native from which they can learn how to write correctly. Surely, you never make spelling mistakes and your grammar is also correct. Hmmm. He opened his mouth and shut it again. 1:0 for me!

@allknowing Yes, like my job as a book reviewer. Things have to be letter perfect. Commas have to be where they are supposed to be, and goodness don't use then in the place of than or the other way around.

Having spent years reading notes from my students' parents, I concur with the assertion that being a native English speaker is little guarantee the person can write sentences or paragraphs with correct word usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, spacing, tense, or capitalization.

Very true. Often native speakers are worse than those who are learning and thus pay more attention. I guess this happens in all languages but of course I know about English best.
