A man in the ladies room

Today my husband and I visited a cafe. It is one of our favorite places, and in the summer months it is nice to sit outside. There are no signs on the restroom doors. I know which one is the ladies room. There used to be sign, but it is gone and it has never been replaced. The sign from the men's room is missing too. Today I went to the restroom and another woman arrived at same time. A man left one of the cubicles. He looked at us, then he looked away and ran out of the room. I am sure that he realized his mistake as soon as he saw us, but I am not surprised that he went into the wrong room. The signs are missing, so new people can easily get confused. I once made the same mistake. There were signs, but in it was in another country and I didn't understand the language, so I picked the men's room by mistake

That is possible. We can't see the restroom doors from the cafe, they are in a corridor.

Ask management to replace them because a man was in the ladies room when you and another were.

They know about it. I don't know why they haven't replaced them yet. Regular customers know which one is which, but new customers don't, so they should replace them. A handwritten sign would be better than nothing.

Might it be that the cafe has adopted a unisex restroom policy?

We have some unisex restrooms here, but they are not very common. If they plan to do this I think it would be a good idea to put both pictograms on the doors like some places do.

@Porcospino It would be preferable if they did let folks know. I find it interesting around here that some places have made what used to be the Men's Room unisex while the Lady's Room is still for Ladies only.

I am glad that here in Europe it's not so horrifying as it is in the United States.

I have seen some strange restrooms in other countries. The strangest one was a restroom in a French pub. You had to walk through the men's room to get to the ladies room. Fortunately no one was using the urinals, but it was a strange experience.

@Porcospino Oh my goodness, that sounds ridiculous. I have seen many small places where there was only one restroom for both sexes, but to make women go through a restroom with urinals is ridiculous.

@LadyDuck Yes, it is ridiculous. It makes me wonder what the person who designed the rooms was thinking. Fortunately I have never seen other restrooms that looked the same way.

The next time you go to this café take a thick felt pen with you and write two big letters on the doors. D = Damer / H = Herrer. A brush and a small pot of oil paint would be better. I think I'd avoid the place if they don't react to what the clients say. You could also write a short letter to the editor for the local newspaper on the topic. Local newspapers like such news.

I am surprised that they haven't done this a long time ago. If they haven't bought new signs yet, they could at least write the letters on the doors. If I were the owner I would have done that.

I made this mistake. I went into men's room. This is not a huge problem. It's funny for me.

I have done it too. In one case it happened because I couldn't read the sign.
