Dehydration can make us very sick and even lead to death. How do we know if we are dehydrating? Do you know how we can tell if we are dehydrating so that we can avoid dehydration? What have you learned? My mother, when she was alive, got so dehydrated one time that in the hospital her tongue was like cardboard. She never quite recovered from that and was never able to go home again after that. Please drink enough water!!!

Dark pee to no pee. Tired, muscle aches and spasms. Severe thirst.

I think with the extreme hot weather some of us are dealing with, it's good to remind one another to drink plenty of water. It's also good to remind our elderly parents, friends and neighbours.

@1hopefulman You have a good point there since the heat in south Louisiana is at a dangerous level.

They say as soon as you're not thirsty it's a sign of dehydration when it's hot out.

Since I drink enough water every day I never feel thirsty but I always drink the self-allotted water for the day.

@just4him It is the amount that I think I need and where I never experience even the mild symptoms of dehydration.

I remember during high school, we had camp for an extra-curricular activity every summer at a local college. We were not allowed to leave the football field that we learned our routines on until perfect. We did not have water on the field. I miss those days though as I was so in shape! I imagine all high schools do that though.

I think it would be good to know way before we are to pass out as we may not have enough time to get the water we need. There has to be a better indicator?

I have heard it said that the thirst mechanism does not work well with many people and that we should drink 6-8 glasses of water on a regular basis. What do you think of that?

When you go to pee you immediately know if you are not drinking enough, dark pee means drink more water.

I'm so very sorry to hear that happened to your poor mother. How heartbreaking. They say that when we are thirsty, we are already dehydrated. I drink water all day long and have a glass first thing upon awakening.

@DianneN There must be something to drinking water. All the vegetation thrives with water. All other living creatures thrive with drinking water. Why should I not also drink water? Let's be "water wise"!

Yes, I have heard that and drink whether I'm thirsty or not. Actually I'm never thirsty. I have the number of glasses that's best for me and will drink that religiously each day. She lived to be 91 and that's pretty good. She was not living alone at the time. She lived with my father and my two brothers. I always kept reminding everyone to drink water but life is life and people are people. The first thing I did this morning when I got up is drink 2 glasses of water. Water is best!

@1hopefulman I'm glad to hear that you are wise enough to drink water throughout the day, too. It is the best and doctors don't count coffee or tea as water. That's a nice long life that your mother reached. Thank goodness for family.

Dry mouth and skin, headache, dizziness and dark urine are some of the symptoms. Every summer many people end up in hospital because of dehydration. They are very weak when they arrive. Some of them have dementia and they forget that it is important to drink enough water.

These days I do not vomit. It could be that I drink enough water and eat food that agrees with my system.
