Just look at the artistry of these wood carvings, aren't they amazing?
I was driving down a old highway leading into the far west side of Las Cruces at the time, it was sometime in the late 1990s, when I passed this carving so I uturned .... illegally but don't tell anyone, ok? ..... and stopped to take these two shots. Looking at it now I wish I had taken more shots but this'll have to do.
I wonder when I lost my desire to just drive around to see what I could find.
Do you know anyone who can do this kind of woodwork?

There is a gentleman here in my neighborhood who does this kind of work, I think he has a shop to our south. IF you are ever in Oregon drive down the coast south from Newport or North from Florence. The area is gorgeous so the drive wont be a big chore. Also a bit further south is the town or Reedsport, they hold an annual chainsaw carving contest each year. Don't know when it is but I'm sure it's on thier website. Anyway there are about twenty of the carvings up in store fronts, at a park and along the sidewalks. It amazes me what can be done with a chain saw.

There was someone in the main town here that did wood sculpting at one time. The works are slowly rotting away and no new ones have appeared. From this, I assume the artist isn't around anymore. Kind of sad because some of the work was impressive. I can do some pretty neat stuff on my wood lathe but sculpting or even carving are not art forms I've developed.

@rebelann My guess is that the remaining ones in town here date from that same time frame. I've always found them to be quite impressive.

I love looking at wood carvings like this - especially if we go through quaint woodsy towns that show/sell these! I had a friend who didn't exactly make carvings like this, but he very well could have. He was an elderly skater friend who built his own wood shop in his backyard. He created some amazing wood things for around his house and even gave me his handmade wooden gifts. He had all the tools and machinery for it - and he could carve the most intricate designs.

That kind of talent is hard to find these days.
The guy who did the above carvings used a chain saw, he'd set up shop in Ruidoso and people could watch him in action. I was told it was amazing to watch.
