Do you read scientific notation? The above number could also be written simply as a power of 10 as 10 to the 7th Power. Of course, the 7 should be small and should be superscripted to the upper right of the 10. I suppose I could write it as 10^7. My TI-84 shows it that way. Written out in standard notation the number is 10,000,000. Written out in words it is ten million. All of this will be part of the early math lessons for my class. If you've read this far, congratulations. I wondered if anyone would, considering this is a math post.

Honestly, I already forgot it and its application anymore. I am not using those kinds of numbers in my work of maybe I am using it unconsciously already.

@DWDavis I am not one of those I’m an accountant. I deal with numbers differently though.

Chances are unless you're an astronomer or a microbiologist, you don't use Scientific Notation.

Thanks a lot. Now I had a flashback to algebra and geometry in high school and it ain't pretty!

@JohnRoberts I used to challenge my students to find me a career or job where they would never use math. 17 years later, and no student has come up with one yet. Math is insidious. We use it every day in ways we don't even realize.

@DWDavis I think most kids dreaded math classes. Those are the ones that are questioned "What use are they later on?"

I was always mediocre at math in school. Ironically, I became an accountant after leaving the military and eventually wound up teaching math.

Did you read between the lines? There is a hidden message based on a quote that's been in the news up here the last day or so.

@JudyEv Our glorious leader (sarcasm font in use) claimed he could end the war in Afghanistan in 10 days and all he'd have to do is kill 10,000,000 Afghanis to do it.

@DWDavis Nothing jumps out at me, I'm afraid. Maybe I didn't see the quote you're referring to.

I know scientific notation from high school and college. Trump is disgusting.

I chickened out and deleted the veiled reference to the Orange One. But I agree wholeheartedly with your assessment of him.

@DWDavis anyone who pays attention to the news should get the reference to 10 million.

It is a neat concept but of very little practical use outside of astronomy, physics, and micro or nano applications.

I hear that a lot, people saying they weren't good at Math. Most people know and can do more Math than they think they can.

I hate math. But I did like Algebra. I used to have one of the scientific/graphic calculators. I lost it when I moved out of my grandmother's house. The calculator I use now does have a scientific function, but it's not as cool as those graphic ones we used in school.
