This morning I was wandering around on Facebook looking at the photos and so forth that my children and grandchildren put on their page. I just couldn't resist using this saying image here. If you have ever heard of the "5 second rule" this will make you laugh. The "5 second rule" is one that many of us would heard from a parent when you dropped food onto the floor. They would typically pick it up, blow it off, and say "5 second rule". Meaning that it was ok as long as you picked it up before 5 seconds of resting on the floor. Did you ever hear this "5 second rule" when you were a kid? Hope everyone out there is having a wonderful day.

Yes, I've heard that many times. Usually the dog gets it before you can pick it up. lol

The same happens around here. My Luke is faster than a speeding bullet when it comes to people food.

Yeah.. I've heard this but very recently. My friend has told about this. But, she quoted it as "3 second rule".

@HazySue Haha! I've heard but not sure what could be the number. But, the logic is the same as you'd mentioned. :) Hehe.. he is so sweet and of-course very active and quick. My regards to him.

That's funny. It's gone from 5 seconds to 3 seconds. Anyway my dog Luke would have it up and swallowed by the time I could start to bend down to pick it up.

I have heard it! Lol. As LindaOhio said, my dogs would get it way before the 5 second rule anyway!

Germs attack the second anything hits the floor. I love the saying but...

I'm not quite into the 5 second rule as I was as a kid, but it depends on where something fell. If the very last chocolate covered Macadamia nut fell on my carpet, I'd probably blow it off and eat it. But if a slice of cherry pie fell on my kitchen floor...no way.

I can certainly understand that. I am not someone who will pick something up off the floor and eat it. My kitchen floor is not the cleanest in town.

I remember this when I was in childhood days. Most kids at my age when dropping and picking the food will say, "It's not more than 5 seconds.' Then, eat the food. It was a fond memory during my childhood years.

Yes, I've heard of it many times. I will not eat anything that touches the floor, even if my house is immaculate.

I can understand that. Once it hits the floor it becomes my little Luke's.

I never heard this say as a kid but as I got older I heard it, not so sure I agree with it, seems very nasty to be eating something off the ground.

I now what you mean. I think it was started because wasting any food however little was unacceptable back in the time when money was hard to come by.

@HazySue I can understand that, I was liking like if I was starving and that was the last of the food, I would have the 30 minute rule. If there is other food to have I will pass on eating off the floor.

My mom's version is that the germs are too shocked with the impact of the fall that it takes them 5 seconds to recover.

Yeah, I've heard of it. I never understood why five seconds specifically. But I've picked stuff up and either blew on it or rinsed it if it fell on the floor. But that's at home.

To tell the truth I think the number was picked out of the air. I don't think is particularly meaningful.

It is really kind of a joking saying. When I was growing up little ones would drop food on the floor regularly. The mom would typically rush to pic it up, blow it off and hand it back to be eaten saying "5 second rule".
