Do you use cookbooks when you cook?

Usually, when I cook I do not follow recipes. I just do whatever pops into my head. I may google recipes just to know the cooking time of something or maybe the temperature at which took cook something in the oven. I find it more fun when I come up with things on my own rather than rely on a recipe. Also, recipes usually require ingredients that I may not have at home, which means I can't make those dishes unless I go to the store and get all those things. So if I want to prepare something right now I have to use what I have and cannot rely on other people's recipes. I don't think I own any cookbooks, except for one that my mom gifted me, which actually remained in her house when I moved out. That was a Pioneer Woman cookbook. When you cook do you come up with recipes from the top of your head or do you rely on cookbooks?

I've been tempted to buy a cookbook (mainly one from Gordon Ramsey) but then I thought I probably will hardly use it so didn't get one.

I have many cookbooks that I bought during our trips. When I want to try a recipe from another country I use a cookbook.

It's cool to get a cookbook from all countries you visit. I never thought of doing that. Kind of like a souvenir and you actually get to try making international dishes.

I've never baked before. Don't think that I am much of a baker.

Some things I just know from trial and error and others yes I might use a cookbook for. Since we do have to eat gluten free things can be very over and over ago. So I use cookbooks that are gluten free to get new ideas for things to eat.

@lovebuglena gluten free means the lack of wheat/barley, and rye. Lots of people have celiac which is autoimmune disorder where the body attacks itself when gluten is in the body eating way your organs. Lots of people just sensitive or have a good allergy to gluten. My 4 year has and extreme allergy to wheat germ which is wheat it’s self so he lives as those he has celiac. He eats lots of things made with rice, or almonds or seeds.

@ShyBear88 Oh wow! I did not know this. Wonder why gluten-free stuff is a recent thing though. I don't think I've seen gluten-free stuff in stores in the 90s or early 00s.

I honestly have no idea what gluten is. I've seen gluten-free stuff at supermarkets and always wondered what that meant.

Mostly I rely on cookbooks but my husband, who does most of the cooking, makes it up as he goes along. It's always delicious.

@lovebuglena My husband does almost all the cooking. If we do any baking, that's usually my job.

As long as it tastes great you don't need a cookbook. Though cookbooks can bring forth inspiration for new dishes.

Who does most of the cooking in your house? In our house it is me.

I have to write things down or I will forget them. So if I see Mom doing something I have to take pen and paper and write all the steps and ingredients if I ever wanna do it myself.

Not often, because if I want to find a recipe I usually get it online. I love cookbooks though.

I do both because I have amassed an extensive cookbook collection. Usually if I use a cookbook, I start out with a recipe and then alter it to suit our tastes.

That's a good idea to change it up.
