September 1948 - Daisy Werthan (Jessica Tandy) is a wealthy, independent 72-year-old Jewish widow who was a grade school teacher. She accidentally backs her Chrysler into the neighbor's yard and totals the car. The insurance company lists her as a high risk driver. Boolie Werthan (Dan Aykroyd), 35, her successful, third generation textile business owner, insists that his mother hire a chauffeur but she refuses. Hoke Colburn (Morgan Freeman), 60, shows his resourcefulness at work; and Boolie looks upon him as a potential chauffeur. Hoke is given the job; but Boolie warns him of his mother's stubbornness He assures Hoke that he can't be fired. When Hoke is brought over to the house, Daisy doesn't want anything to do with him. She doesn't want "some chauffeur" staying at her house, eating her food and going through her things. A brand new 1949 Hudson sits in the garage, not driven. This movie is a comedy/drama; and a very good one. When Hoke and Miss Daisy butt heads, it's always a funny situation. The film had 9 Academy Award nominations and won 4, including Best Actress for Tandy and Best Picture. I have no reservations recommending this movie. The movie was released in 1989 and is rated PG.
