Why Can't Men Get It Right When Grocery Shopping?

My hubby volunteered to do the grocery shopping this weekend. He didn't go yesterday and I didn't fret. We did not need a lot of things this week and the list was short. He made his shopping trip tonight. He has learned from past experiences that you buy what is on the list. No substitutes. You don't buy another brand and you don't get something similar. So how did he do tonight? He didn't do too bad but did have a couple of problems. First, he bought sharp shredded cheese which should have been medium. I asked him why he bought sharp when he doesn't even like sharp cheddar cheese? His reply was that it was on the list. I looked at the list and it said medium sharp shredded cheddar cheese. Still a boo-boo. Next was sour cream. I had a small container on the list and he brought home a large container. We don't use a lot of sour cream and I am the only one that likes it. I asked why a large container. He said they were out of small ones. I'll give him this one because he was being nice. The third boo-boo was extra fat hot dogs. I hate those. He didn't even notice this. I didn't fuss because he said they were almost out of hot dogs. I've never seen Walmart out of hot dogs. They always have an endless supply. So why is it so hard for men to buy what is on the grocery list and not stray? It's not a hard job. I even make my list by the way the store is organized so he can zip right on through. I didn't fuss tonight. I got out of going to the store and that made up for his boo-boos tonight. Photo: Pixaby, public domain

It could have been worse. You could have sent him to get Adeline and come back with Billy!

Hubby usually gets exactly what I tell him to get. I am not really particular on brands but some things like sour cream and mayo I prefer one kind.

That is why I made the new rule...you buy exactly what is on the list or skip it if they don't have it.

@lovebuglena That doesn't work out here. Not good reception in the store and even worse at our house. We are in the boonies.

@kareng Or he can at least call and say "hey they are out of this or that. do you want something else instead?"

I like to think I do well when I do the shopping. It has taken me a long time to train the missus to write a comprehensible and readable shopping list.

It's hard for them because they "look" but they do not "see" things. I notice when we go with my husband grocery shopping. While I buy vegetables I ask him to go to the cheese section to buy yogurt and other cheese. I go there, he is there standing in front of EXACTLY what I asked and he says "they should be out of it, I do not see it on the shelves".

But yet they have no problem finding cookies, ice cream, chips and their favorite snacks. Yep, they look but do not see.

i dunno why such'd be so hard. the hubs buys lots 'f schtuff not'n the list. many can goods that i've figured out i can donate to the local food bank 'fore they 'xpire. i can't eat 'em 'n he "fergets" 'n keeps buyin' more, not usin' the eldest cans 1st. i'm hopin' to get to where's i can tend such myself, without his aide. he's no concept 'f a budget.

At least you can donate to the food banks. I hate that when cans get shoved to the back of the pantry and you can't see them. I cleaned mine out not too long ago and found some ancient cans. lol

@crazyhorseladycx That is true. There must be something to the hoarding of food. Before my mom's house flooded she had a whole room stocked with boxed and canned foods. All went to waste because yep, lots of outdated stuff in there.

@kareng yes ma'am, i prefer such to findin' 'em 'xpired. e'en though they might be ok to consume?? who'd wanna risk that chance. i'm gigglin' coz my momma filled her trashcan last week whilst cleanin' out her pantry. dunno why her'n the aunt feel the need to hoard food?? i told her she needs to start doin' such quarterly 't least - give those older canned/boxed goods to the food bank so's can be used 'fore 'tis too late. such a waste 'f funds 'n food when so many 're goin' hungry.

Lol! At least he tried. My husband took over the role of grocery shopping for me during my last two years of teaching. Trust me when I say he’s gotten much better with practice.

They really are. Mine has proven that over and over again. My bill is always a good bit higher when he goes along too. He can't stick to a list and adds this and that. Oh, we need to try this. This looks good, let's get some. And then there is the freak out mode at checkout when the bill is (fill in the blank). They really have no idea what groceries cost.

that's why i put "no substitutions" on the shopping list for my brother sometimes. left to his own devices, sometimes he'll come home with an offbrand that sucks. no "bar S" hot dogs.EVER.yuck.

That is our normal rule, no substitutes. I really don't like being surprised with a new brand. I think we have a good rule going.

I don't know, but most of them do not seem to get what is on the list when they go grocery shopping. I gave friend a list of things to buy the last time when he went shopping, and he came back with two of the six items on it.. with vague excuses about he couldn't find the others.or something. If it isn't in front of their face, they don't bother to look too hard, I have found.

That is true too. They have no clue where to look. LOL. I organize my list by aisle. That helps a little bit. Otherwise, he would be going from one end to the other over and over again.

Okay, I'll rephrase. MOST men...haha. Is that better? I do agree with you. Some households the men do all of the shopping and cooking. I'm sure they do a lot better in the grocery store.
