Do You Get The Most Use From Everything You Buy?

I try to make sure everything I purchase is used frequently enough to be worth the money I spend on the item. I can't say that I'm always successful which brings me to my question for today.
Can you recall an item you've purchased and either never used it or hardly used it enough to warrant the purchase?
For me adding HBO to my cable subscription wound up being a waste of money. Over time I could never find anything worth watching except for the occasional series like "Game of Thrones." Unfortuately, waiting for the next season could take years and in the meantime your being charged every month for something you never utilize! And don't get me started on the industrial snowblower I bought that's been sitting unused in the shed for 4 years now waiting for that huge snowstorm which never happens, lol.
So what have you wasted your money on?

@dgobucks226 Also the robot that pretended to clean carpets and the floor was messy, but I was able to get it back in time to the store. I stopped buying souvenirs on trips, I still have so many little things that almost look ugly when you are back home.

@LadyDuck And those robots look so efficient when you see them cleaning the carpets on the commercials
Totally agree about those souvenirs Anna

Now I've heard of those robots that clean your carpets but have not heard of ones to mow the lawn. Great invention if only it had worked.
One I'm guilty of is Souvenir buying on trips. How many magnets, coffee mugs, key chains or hats do you need.

I bought a tablet a few years ago and was excited to own it. However, it's a piece of junk. If I had figured it out sooner, I would have taken it back for a complete refund. However, you only have so much time to do that. Every so often I'll turn it on and hope I can work with it, but never can.
I hope you cancel out HBO since you don't need it.

@dgobucks226 Now that is a problem as the only places I still see them is the thrift shops, and even those won't be taking them much longer. Sounds like you'll be throwing money away. I know that's what I did when I got rid of my VCR. I had to throw away the tapes. I got a lot of use out of them.

@just4him Yes, it appears they are history. Many years of recording terrific programs and sporting events gone. Unfortunately progress cannot be stopped. A sad day for me
Time for a recording DVR I guess.

Yes, I cut the cord with HBO. Sometimes you purchase something I don't want to go through the hassle of returning it. I've done that a few times. Now I have to let go of my 1980's VCR since it doesn't work and is collecting dust. Now what to do with all those recorded tapes I have?

If I buy something and I don't like it then I usually give it to someone who will make use of it or I will throw it way and stop thinking about it.
I bought an agenda last year that when I got home I saw that it went from August to July and didn't think it was worth my time to return it.
This year I bought another one and then found out that Sunday was missing. It is ridiculous but I have divided Saturday in half and use the bottom half for Sunday. I hate to waste anything!

@dgobucks226 I guess it's just the way we are. Some of us cannot just waste anything or not get our money worth out of it.

I have been very wasteful over time and bought many things I did not really use. They were impulse buys. I think the worst one was my Shark vacuum cleaner. It is so cumbersome, the cylinder is too small and I generally hate it. I have laminate floors and mats and I would rather sweep or use my carpet sweeper on the mats than use it.

@dgobucks226 I don't take out extended warranties as I find that most of them don't cover wear and tear and that's what most problems are related to. I learned that when I took out GAP insurance on my car. What a waste of money. I am looking for a vacuum for my car as I can't park outside my house. Is it good?

Did they offer you an extended warranty on your vacuum purchase? I never purchase them myself, Extended warranties can be a waste of money most of the time.
I don't have a Shark, but did buy a Dirt Devil Vacuum for small jobs like my throw rugs and car carpets. Fortunately, that purchase worked out, but I have a carpet cleaner I bought that is collecting dust in my basement.

@sprite1950 The car vacs are good and easy to use because they plug into your outlet. They do an adequate job of cleaning the car. Perfect no, but effective! I also use a standing vac but that requires an extension cord.

I only get the basic cable package, usually, since all I really watch is hockey, football, TV Land, and Rockies games when I have time.
But since I'm Bipolar, I totally follow the symptom of spending money I don't have on useless crap I don't need just because, well, I have to. I know that I do it, but stopping is another matter.

Many cable packages here do not have access to area sports teams with the basic package. I usually have to upgrade a level to receive those. But I did cut the cord with HBO, Showtime and other premium channels and it doesn't bother me at all. I so have Netflix and find programming there.
As far as spending I'm not Bipolar, but when I get a coupon for a store for $10 off a purchase, I just can't let it go to waste, even if I don't need anything
I'm sure being Bipolar can be a great frustration for you at times.

If I waste my money on anything, it HAS to be the lottery. But most of the things I buy I try to get every single ounce of it used up. Many of my braise sauces, for example, are a 'washing' out of a salad dressing bottle, jar of some sauce or another, I cut open my toothpaste tubes etc. Nothing really goes to waste in our house. Every penny counts.

@porwest At least the magnets I buy serve a purpose even though I barely look at the places I've been. Yes, I know a few people like your wife who cannot resist a souvenir

@dgobucks226 I have never really understood the draw of souvenirs. Most of the time you have a magnet on your fridge or something and NO ONE seems impressed you have been to whatever place, IF they even notice the magnet. It's big business though, and my wife is a sucker for them—and buying souvenirs for anyone and everyone we know. Ugh.

I agree. HBO used to be have a better selection of movies, some even fairly new. Some people do over purchase food items for sure. Another item which winds up collecting dust are cookbooks. My Mom had several in her basement over the years.

Vacuum cleaners are an important purchase. You definitely want to find one your comfortable with.
One item I have wasted a purchase on is magazine subscriptions.

About month ago I bought some cat food that my cat wouldn't eat so that was a waste of money. I also bought a cat mat once and my cat wouldn't play on it. I usually think before buying stuff to know if I am going actually use something. Speaking of HBO, I usually wait until Direct TV has a HBO free preview and then tape everything I want to see.

That's a good way to take advantage of a promotion!!! I've bought way to many play toys for my cat when she was alive. How many things can a cat bat around, ha, ha.. And she was always happy just playing with a string or hiding in a box. Seems like pet toys are another area where we can waste a bit of money

I try to make the most of what I buy but not always. I have gotten some things for my animals and was able to return them to the stores.

Lol Netflix I would say... the cable network is quite cheap in my country but as my siblings live abroad they forced me to buy some memberships that aren't useful here....when I subscribed to Netflix I noticed with 3 days time that all the movies were being offered by cable net server for free. I was told some movies are exclusively for Netflix but then I always found them available within month on the server. It works for me for free. I am not that big a fan to watch a movie right away!

That's a good point about eventually finding the movies elsewhere. If your not in a hurry to see them they will pop up somewhere in time.

Good to know. I thought Dell had a good reputation. And lap tops are such an important purchase. You really want to choose something your comfortable with and suits your needs.
