Stolen

I don't want to think anyone in the building I live in is a thief, and I definitely don't want to believe my friend down the hall is one.
I'm a trusting person. In the three years, I've lived here, I haven't had any trouble with any of my neighbors. Yet, in the past couple of months, I've found things missing. Little things, seemingly unimportant things. Yet to me they were important.
I might not have had a great relationship with my parents, but one thing I wanted from their collection of stuff was a teapot shaped tea bag holder with a cute face on it that said, I hold the bag. I went to have tea one day and went to reach for it and it wasn't there, and I've since searched the entire apartment for it. It's gone.
During the day, I tend to leave my door open so I don't need to get up from this chair to answer the door if my friend down the hall comes over, which she does often.
Today, when I went to do laundry, I went to Aldi for a few items for tomorrow's church picnic. I forgot to buy bananas. I had a gift card in my wallet with a couple of dollars remaining on it. When I opened my wallet to retrieve it, it's missing. Not only is my Target gift card missing, so is my fuel rewards card, and my Sam's card. The one side of my wallet looks deserted. The thief did leave my PayPal and debit cards. My insurance card, license, and car registration are also in my wallet, untouched, praise God.
I know I have a tendency to throw my cards after using them into the bottom of my bag. I looked there. I took everything out, put the new insurance card in my wallet and straightened out all my business cards and put them back in their pocket in my bag. None of the missing cards were in the bag.
I'm stunned. Shocked. In my 66 years, no one has stolen anything from my wallet before.
I opened up the other e-mail address I don't use often to see if the rewards card had been used recently. It hadn't. The last receipt was from when I used it last earlier this month.
Right now, I'm too stunned to be angry. That will come later.
In other news, my son is going to talk to someone he works with who is a paralegal so I can find out about the contract I have with my publisher. He didn't try to talk me out of canceling the contract, which is good. I told him how long I've had it and what the terms were.
Yesterday, I started working on the Thread of Evidence again. I'm hoping to publish it by the end of September. I'm going to wait and see what my son's friend says about the contract.
Now, it's time to put the clothes away, and the few groceries, and interact with you. Thank you for reading.

I wonder if you have a kleptomaniac in the building? A person who isn't stealing to be malicious, but because they can't seem to help themselves. I'm wondering if that's what you're dealing with, especially since your stolen gift card hasn't been used. Many times kleptomaniacs don't steal things for their personal gain.

I don't know if the gift card hasn't been used, but the fuel rewards card hasn't. The gift card had the total remaining on it, so she would know it wasn't much only a couple of dollars.
I know she likes to spend money which is why she has a payee to keep things under control.

I wish I thought you had just misplaced some things. But that is adding up to a lot of things. The missing cards are very strange ones to take.
Hope you have a good rest of the day. And maybe start locking the door more.

@wolfgirl569 I might. I need to get into a better frame of mind before I confront her or she'll get both barrels of my anger, which I'm sure it will be at boiling point should that happen right now. I'm none too happy. At least I'm not numb any longer like I was yesterday and most of the morning until the picnic.

I am sure that feels awful and to have to think it may be a friend is even worse.

Strange that some of your things are missing! Maybe you should make sure your door and windows are closed when you leave he apartment from now on.

most disheartenin' that someone 's stolen yer tea thingy :( to go through yer wallet'n take those items though? that'd be more than disturbin'. perhaps ya should inquire 'f such with yer friend/neighbor? seems she's the most frequent visitor. fingers crossed nobody from yer bible study'd do such, but then 'gain one ne'er really knows.
i hope that paralegal can help ya out, hon. glad he didn't try to talk ya out'ta such, but offerin' 'ssistance 'nstead.

It's no one from my Bible Study group as I'm in the same room with them the whole time.
I don't want to blame her. However, I did take back the game and cards she kept here for game night. She didn't answer her door, so I just left them. If she ever did open her door, she hasn't come down to find out why I left them there, or maybe she knows I suspect her.
Yes, I'm glad he didn't try to talk me out of it either.

Oh my goodness! I'm so sorry all those things went missing, and I really hope it wasn't your friend down the hall.
Goodluck with the contract thing.

That is really disheartening. I have the feeling if you mention to your friend the things that were missing they will either mysteriously re appear, or nothing will be gone again. She must be desperate if it was her, or a Kleptomaniac. I know someone who unfortunately was rooming with a kleptomaniac.

I mentioned to her about the tea bad holder and she said she could find anything if I would give her the chance. I told her it wasn't here, and it never mysteriously showed up after I told her, so I don't know, and don't want to think it's her.
Yes, it is disheartening. I'm going to need to cancel the fuel rewards card and get a new one. The Sam's card had expired. I don't go there as often as I used to. So, if she tries to use it, she'll be in for a big surprise, along with the fact it's my picture on the card.

With my door open during the day, anybody. Thing is, I didn't hear anyone come in, so the only person I could think of is my friend down the hall who knocks first and comes in when I tell her to without leaving the comfort of my chair.

Its time to buy a nanny cam, you know one of those teddy bears with a hidden camera. Lock the doors! You need the get up and down exercise and to keep things from vanishing.

My door is locked. I haven't heard of a nanny cam.
Yes, I do need to get up from this chair and do so several times an hour.

I'm so sorry. I have been stolen from a couple of times and its an awful feeling.
Being cautious as you are now is the best thing to do and praying for whoever did it-they need to find Jesus.

@just4him I'm confused. How did she deny it and admit it at the same time?

@LovingMyBabies She said she didn't have them, and in the next breath, she said they didn't work anyhow.

Although you don’t like to think of anyone stealing it does happen.. even with people you least expect. Used to have someone who would steal from purses at work. Could never prove it but we know who it was.

@kobesbuddy No. She told me I'd better and if I didn't she would call them on me for false accusation. I know it's not false accusations, but I also can't totally prove it. Only with what she said, and she could deny saying she said that since there weren't any witnesses.
I'll let her sweat about what I threatened her with. I'm not going to follow through with that either. I'm not vindictive.
