A Steal On Pork Loin

From time to time one of those big ass pork loins goes on sale. And when that happens of course, being the anal retentive money guy I am, I take advantage of it. Those "big ass" pork loins were on sale at Schnucks. My wife does not work full time for the store anymore but still works there since she took her new job as a pharmacy tech at a major hospital. So we still get our 10% off. They were on sale for $1.49 per pound. With her discount that brought it down to $1.34 per pound. I got almost 11 pounds for about $15. I cut it up into three roasts and three packages of 4 each pork loin chops. For $15 we will be eating off of this for a LONG time. I just love it when we can have good food and save a ton of money to boot. We are having one of the roasts tonight for dinner.

Incidentally (and I am not sure how I missed your comment 6 years ago), I just bought one yesterday on sale for the same price as I posted here. $1.49 per pound. I have to cut it up, still, but I will probably get to that later on today sometime.

@porwest It is a miracle when we get meat now for the same price we bought it years ago. Those are te times when you wish you had a bigger freezer.

@marguicha I had a chest freezer for a long time, but it went kaput, and so far, I haven't decided to replace it. But yes, if I could load up, there would definitely be a reason to do it nowadays.

That's a very good deal. I have no need for the huge beef roast like that I used to buy and cut up. However, I do look for a good-sized roast I can cut in half for two meal in the crockpot. Each meal makes three meals. So, I do well too with on pot roast.

@porwest I don't have a large freezer, so I have to buy smaller. I used to buy those large briskets and cut them down for many meals.

@just4him Lacking freezer space does make a difference. I actually would like to get one of those tall stand up freezers. Just haven't gotten one yet. I hate chest freezers...too easy for things to get lost on the bottom and harder to organize and find what you need or want.

I always say, so long as I can freeze anything, buying as big a piece as I can is always the best for the wallet.

We often buy a large cut of meat and it lasts for ages. We might freeze some and/or cook it in different ways.

It's funny to me that I wrote this post 6 years ago (and somehow managed to miss your comment no less), and paid $1.49 per pound for a pork loin on sale then, and just bought one yesterday for... $1.49 per pound.

@JudyEv Maybe SOME of the inflation has been planted and isn't exactly true? Could be. I won't put that out there as fact. But perhaps as a possibility. Drive the narrative and you can influence the perception, and when you can do that, you control the story.

That´s a good deal. I always buy pork meat on sale and freeze them for later use. Buying on sale is a good way of saving expenses.

I love a good deal. We've been looking for a sale on Country-style ribs for a long time; but they haven't had one...and no sales on a pork loin. Good job!

Luckily, country style ribs come from this slab of meat, and I have one waiting to be cut up as we speak, and will make some out of it when I butcher it and get it ready for the freezer.

Yes! I love those deals. I used to buy those as well when on sale and cut then up myself, do you half freeze yours for easier slicing?

The roast sounds good. When the chill in the air comes, this is the kind of food I enjoy.
