Takes Me Back 40 Years

Here it is, Labor Day weekend approaching, and a hurricane with a “D” name is heading for Florida. That takes me back 40 years. My first duty station after boot camp was NAS Jacksonville, Florida. I was home on leave in late August when news began to focus on a hurricane named David, and that it was heading for Florida. Well, that put an abrupt end to my first post-boot camp leave! I left home early to get to Jacksonville before Hurricane David did. My first weekend of life in the “real Navy” (they always told us in boot camp things were different in “the real Navy”) was spent hunkered down in the barracks. The damage wasn’t terrible on the base, as David meandered offshore up the Florida coast before slamming into Savannah, Georgia. The name David was retired. I hope Dorian goes away. The appropriate song:

I hope it does too. I can't imagine what it is like to be in a hurricane.

Wind and rain. And wind and rain. And more wind and more rain. In 1975 we lived on the west coast of Florida in a mobile home, and the very outer fringes of Eloise went by in the Gulf of Mexico. It felt like the mobile home was on one of those paint shakers.

@JudyEv — there are regulations in Florida about securing mobile homes. Winds around 160 MPH are no match for site-built buildings, so mobile homes don’t stand much of a chance. Having said that, as with any disaster you can see five houses demolished and a house next to them untouched.

@FourWalls That would have been very scary. I guess people tie down their motor homes to the best of their ability?

Brr! My brother graduated from there in September 1971 and I nearly froze my butt off!! I went through boot camp in Orlando....in summer. No worries about the cold there!

I hope that Dorian makes a turn back out into the Atlantic. It could be a truly devastating storm for Florida.

I am watching this one as it seems to be increasing. I have family in the area. I hope it slows down soon.
