The Good Old Days

I saw this image on lovethispic and the saying took me back to my childhood. My mind was quickly flooded with memories of running around outside playing dodge ball, softball, tag football, Mother-May- I, and just having a ball. We spent many hours playing games, riding our bikes, and exploring. We laughed, we argued, we made up. We interacted face-to-face everyday with those in the neighborhood. It was wonderful. I think that many of the kids today miss out on that face to face companionship. How sad is that? It seems to me that staying indoors on a phone or computer is a sad commentary of how some kids are growing up these days. I am thinking that maybe the reason there seems to be so many behavior problems among the young might be because the were not learning how to get along face-to-face when they were a child. They weren't outside playing with others, laughing, arguing, and making up. What do you think?

We played in the rain as long as there was no thunder or lightning.

@andriaperry We used to play in the rain until our moms called us in. Back then I lived in Miami.

@Tampa_girl7 We loved running around in the rain. Until it started thundering or we were made to come in.

'gree 100%! that'n too much molly-coddlin'. organized sports've sort'a turned 'nto a joke 'f sorts. all get a trophy, no motivation to work'n their young skills. seems they grow with the thoughts that all should be handed 'em. add that to the lack 'f social skills 'n 'tis a bit 'f a disaster.

It is a shame. Kids need to be able to understand that they can not be the winner of everything. I am wondering if that is part of the reason some of them feel so entitled.

I think you hit that one right on top of the nail. It's rare that I see kids playing outside ..... come to think of it, if not for the school bus I wouldn't have known people here had kids

I did hear kids splashing around in their large pool at the end of last school year but since then it's been quiet @HazySue

It is the same here in our neighborhood. Even with a pool in the backyard they are inside.

I think that the kids in our days are too protected by their parents. They keep them under a glass dome, even the teacher cannot say nothing or the parents will get offended. This is not the way to grow kids.

@HazySue Many teachers have decided to quit because of the attitude of the parents, this is so sad.

I think too many times parents make excuses for their children. They need to take the time to teach them that taking responsibility for their actions is a good thing, not something to be avoided.

I think you could very well be right. All these communication skills were part and parcel of our growing up.

We learned to get along, that you don't always win, and how to talk to others. It was a whole education of social graces.

@HazySue The more I think about it, the more I believe you are right about learning social graces as children while out playing with others.

You have a very good point. I was a bookworm as a kid but spent hours and hours riding my bike and playing outdoors.

You can be both a bookworm and an outdoor kid. I think back then more of us were better readers and well as adept at getting along.

I loved playing outside, too. If I wasn't outside, I was inside playing with my dollhouse or reading a book! I hate how kids have to have electronics to be entertained all the time.

I am not fond of it either. They need more outside activities and more reading both. I used to climb a tree, get settled on a big branch and read.

It would be wonderful. A wish I would make for my grandchildren would be for them to have the type of childhood we had we when we were kids.

In the good old days we solved all of our differences on the playground. Now people just shoot each other.

@HazySue 100% agreed! I always made my kids go outside and play, or we were always doing fun things as a family that got us out of the house. That kept them engaged and away from their phones and video games.

True. They needed to be outside running around playing games with others, winning or losing, and learning to get along.

I agree, but the kids I know are out playing with friends and busy with sports. Many parents don’t bother doing the right thing for their kids. It’s so sad.

The children I came in contact with at the school went home and stayed inside. They were not outside playing or joining in social groups. It was so sad.

@DianneN I agree. Unfortunately there are parents who are not as involved in their child's life as they should be.

I agree. Their companion is a video game controller and their interaction is the game and whoever they're playing with online. No face to face. I see it all the time with my youngest and he's 41.

The game or the tv. The human contact seems to be woefully missing.

We loved to play outside; and I also loved to read BOOKS! How quirky is THAT? Kids need to do more of that.

I totally agree. We played in the dirt and got so dirty, but did not care. We fell and we got up and kept right on going. What fun we had back in the day.

In my own perception, kids nowadays have their own world and they are very smart when it comes to new changes in the technology.

They are smart in the way of technology. Unfortunately I watched middle school children for many years unable to socialize, play together, and just plain get along.
