Sorry, 60 is not old!

So, anyway, I am certain it is because I am this age, that I found this offensive, but the book I was reading last night kept discussing a 60 year old woman as being an old lady! Ok, granted 60 isn't young, and some people can be old at 60, but there is no way I consider myself to be old. Middle aged yes, late middle aged yes, but not old. The author was really on my nerves as she must have described the woman about 5x this way. I am considering writing her a message. Even legally, old age doesn't traditionally begin until 65, so what is this author's problem? People are living longer and longer anyway, and old age in rel terms probably doesn't begin these days until age 75. Would you be perturbed about this as well?

You're right. 60 isn't old. I'm in my mid-60s now and I still don't consider myself old, though I will take advantage of the senior rates and discounts, but that's it. With the way things are going, 75 isn't old either. Maybe 90.

I know, and although some people might be old at that age, the vast majority of us are not!

@snowy22315 True. I like to think of myself as just hitting middle age.

@just4him I just think of myself as middle aged period. I don't think I will consider myself old, until I am in my 70's.

I believe it's just another number. This morning I felt very old, like 110. I got laughing and moving and back on track and now I feel like I am 5. I guess I see age as a sliding scale!

60 is the new 40--or something like that--I know 60-year-olds who feel old and I know 90-year-olds that feel young--The author must be trying to get to something--but I am not sure what

She was trying to say, she had nothing better to do, then spy on her neighbors. However, most 60 year olds I know are enjoying life or working, not spying on their neighbors cuz they have nothing better to do!

Don't let it bother you. How you feel physically is more important than a number anyway. =)

Is this a fictional book? Is this a modern (written within the past decade) book? If so, then yeah that's pretty offensive, especially as they seemed to make the character's age such a big deal. I mean, the way you made it seem, it sounds as if that's part of the character's description. "Eloise, brown hair, short, aged 60" I mean, you don't put a person's age in a description of who they are normally. Anyway... It wouldn't hurt to write the author.

@ScribbledAdNauseum She isn't she is just someone who wrote a Kindle book, and based on her writing, she is unlikely to ever be a "big name."

@snowy22315 True, but you have to consider that she may not ever see your comments. If she's a big enough author, she may have a publicity team that reads those types of things.

I do not consider myself old if I am over 65 now and my husband does not look (or think) like an old man even if he is 73.

Some people feel old at 50, I wouldn't worry about it. I know some 60 who are active, and some who are content not being active, sitting home, on the porch, watching the neighbors, knowing everything that goes on in the neighborhood. I have one of those neighbors, who is just 60 and watches everyone and tells, what she sees. I try and hurry in when she is out there, as I don't need to hear what everyone has been doing all day. In that case the person is existing and not fully living.

@snowy22315 Not the ones I know, very few in fact are active, the one active one I know has some series health issues holding her down right now. Or she would be traveling.

Perhaps that particular 60 yr old was old. I don't know, people age differently with genetics and life style so I wouldn't be offended but, well idk, depends on the context I suppose.

The other day I heard on the new that's an elderly lady here got hit by a car. When they later released her age, she was 54. I do not consider 54 elderly, nor do I think 60 is old.

54 is far from elderly. I consider it to be "approaching middle age."

Most everyone I know that is chronologically older than my husband and me are physically much older. Usually I let younger people talk about their ailments and all I can say is 'Wow' it really stinks to be them. Some of the ailments are very serious. My husband has 2 grand kids. A month before the one turned 5 years old, he was taken the the hospital emergency room with a case of pneumonia. Three years later he got it again. His younger sister was just diagnosed with pneumonia as well. They both have had and are susceptible to bronchitis, allergies and who knows what else. Needless to say, they're both a mess. Right now, he's 8 years old and she's 6. I can only imagine what they will be like 10 years from now. But enough about them. I have never had so much a one cavity let alone any major issues. My husband is in pretty decent shape too. Neither of us are spring chickens but I think we're in much better shape than many younger people are, starting with hid grand kids.

I would find that offensive too. All you can do is know that she'll change her mind when she gets there. At the moment, it probably seems way too far in the future for her to even contemplate. She'll learn!
