What is behind the Snap, Crackle and Pop associated with the familiar breakfast cereal Rice Krispies?
According to Scientific American, it all comes down to the cooking process. When the rice is baked in the oven it expands forming little air pockets inside. When milk is added to the cereal it gets absorbed by the walls of the kernel causing it to break and producing the sounds you hear. Pretty neat!
I'm a Rice Krispies eater from childhood but never knew why they made that cool sound. I do notice when I make Rice Krispies Treats the kernels are much quieter...

The only problem is that you have to eat the entire box just to feel as if you actually ate something!
