Waking up to sad news

United States
September 15, 2019 8:47am CST
Well, he's at home now so I hope he continues to feel better. I turn my phone off at night unless I need to use it as an alarm. I woke up this morning, turned on my phone and promptly began to receive three texts from my aunt. Her grandson, my 2nd cousin, had to be admitted to the local children's hospital. Luckily, he is home now. He was dehydrated with a temperature of 105. He also had stuff coming out of both ends (the kindest way I can think to describe it) and apparently had bronchitis an pneumonia. Those were the things that got him taken to the hospital. They gave him fluids and apparently decided he was well enough to go home and rest. I'll find out more later.

I'm glad they found your cousin's illness was treatable and probably, in the early stages. He was very sick!

@ScribbledAdNauseum The problem with flu and pneumonia, it goes through the entire family.

@kobesbuddy Yep, especially if the family interacts a lot with each other. My aunt, uncle and cousins live on "The Compound" aka one street where they all have houses either across from one another or beside one another.

I think I had pneumonia once in my life. I was a pretty healthy kid and had to fake being sick. My cousins an 2nd cousins have always had health issues and constant / chronic pneumonia or bronchitis.

The last update I had was that he was laying on the couch watching cartoons. The poor little guy. I doubt he'll be sent to school the majority of next week.

I am not sure if he came home with any medicine. I'd imagine my cousin is giving him some elderberry syrup though, unless the docs advise against it. The last update was that he was on the couch and watching cartoons. I hope he's able to rest.

@sallypup It is. I hope he continues to feel better, the poor little fellow. He's usually full of energy and curiosity. He will be a great artist (drawing) if he ever chooses to be, he's already pretty great at it at age 5.

My cousins and 2nd cousins have always had health issues. It's probably a combination of the houses they live in and their immune system. I know one house was built in the 30's (the one my aunt lives in) and I think the one her son bought (my 2nd cousins live in) was built a decade later. Probably some unseen mold or something.

@ScribbledAdNauseum maybe they should move somewhere better. It's not worth it if it's costing their health.

@Ladanger They want to move. Well, let me clarify.. My cousin and his wife want to move. I think they are trying to save up some money. Right now they live across from my aunt. The house is very small, only two beds, which means the kids have to share one bedroom.

I am glad he improved enough to be able to go home. Pneumonia and bronchitis are terrible on a system so small.

OK good, hoping the kid gets fine sooner. But I think due to emergencies, you should keep you phone always available for people to call you at night on only emergencies...well its very important

@ano460 We do not live far away from family, and so if anything, they can come to us and wake us up if necessary.

I turn my phone off at night only. There's someone else with a phone in the house who they can try to reach if necessary.

@MarymargII So far all of them are staying well. I read about a virus that's going around that appears like allergies but lingers. I'm hoping none of them get that as it seems like that would pass itself around pretty easily.
