Easy Way to Back-Up Your Photos

With thousands of photos on my computer, and even though I use the cloud for backup, I also use (thumb-sized) thumb drives for my photos and any other important documents on my computer to keep in a safe place. I hope this helps answer some of your questions @crazyhorseladycx. These are a great inexpensive way to back up your photos. A thumb drive is a little computer storage unit, about the size of a small thumb, with a USB connector on one end. They come in various storage capacities and speeds and you can spend anywhere from $5 dollars up to $100 dollars for one, depending on how much storage you want and how fast you want it to be. You can buy them in many places, including Amazon, WalMart and Best Buy. To use it, you just plug it into a USB port on your computer, and it shows up on the computer as if it were just another hard drive. You can copy and paste files to and from it, like any other drive. It's for transferring files from one computer to another. You can get all sizes as well. 156MB, 1GB, 2GB, etc. Here is a YouTube video that shows step by step how to use these little thumb drives. There are many other sites and videos out there that also explain in detail how to use these thumb drives.

I have an external hard drive that I use to back everything up. I believe it can hold 1 TB of information. I have been using it for several years, and probably haven't even used 10% of it's capacity yet! And I still do use thumb drives every now and then as well, as they are easy to carry around and can be used to transfer information quickly!

I also use the time machine through the Apple software, but these thumb drives are just another level of protection. Just another option. Another member was asking what I used, so glad we are all sharing.

I am sorry! You can put a label on them, yes. Or use a black sharpie to write on them, whatever is easier. Or put them in an envelope and write on the envelope. Was trying to make it easy for you. They are inexpensive and come in many different sizes.

@CarolDM oh, don't be, hon! i 'ppreciate the info. i'm most challenged'n these. the son tells me 'tis not diff'rent than back'n the day savin' schtuff to floppy disks - jest faster'n holds more'n less space, lol. i'd like to get the pics sorted - diff'rent bird species, critters, etc. ya know, so i might've better luck huntin' 'em down when i want one? dang if'n i can't spend several hours searchin' fer such! didn't realize they'd 'nough room to be written 'pon. i'd need some sort'a system though with so many pics/files needin' saved. thanks much, ms. carol!

@crazyhorseladycx I wish we lived closer, I would love to help you. I have mine in albums, and dates. I hope your son can do this for you. It takes a lot of time but is so much easier. My 25,000 photos are on one thumb drive, just one!

@CarolDM It's a good idea. I had several photos that should have been saved on my phone, but they aren't there now..and I am not sure why..at one point I deleted some photos..and I think they were casualities...

@snowy22315 Sometimes you can recover deleted photos, just depends on how long ago you deleted them.

Flashdrives are good - but remember their life is between 9-10 years only. so replace them every once in awhile!!!! Good backup system Carol!!!!

I use all the above, the cloud and the thumb drives and an external hard drive, I am a little paranoid about my photos.

I keep a lot of my documents on flash (or thumb) drives. I have several that I use for different things. One is just for pictures that I've been sent via email that I want to print out. I also have some Bing pictures on it that were some of my favorites that I print out as well.
