Yesterday Hubby and I were driving through Petrified Forest National Park. I heard something fly into the van window just behind my head. I felt something (wings perhaps?) brush against my back. Asking my husband to look before I leaned back, he saw nothing. A moment or two later it suddenly flew from the back of the van onto the dashboard immediately in front of me! &@#%. What is that! It was two inches (5 cm) long! Hubbies reaction was similar. Neither of us is given to using expletives....but this was almost enough to have my husband drive off the road and me to want to cower. We successfully shooed it out of the window. Windows were closed....air conditioner turned on. No, I didn't take a picture....found this on line.... A Pepsis Wasp, aka a tarantula hawk!

I checked from the picture and I found that this is a tarantula hawk, it is a spider wasp that prays on tarantulas. It is pretty scary. I am reading that they usually do not sting without provocation. I would not try.

I was initially worried that it was between me and the van seat. That was before I actually saw it. The only reassurance in seeing it? It wasn't behind me any longer.

Socorro is only about 300 miles north of EP @Morleyhunt So which way are you headed, east or west? I'll bet you're really close to crazyhorseladycx.

It was truly a scary moment. We are actually 'close' to El Paso at the moment. Not to far from Socorro, NM.

A tarantula hawk looks very frightening. I was in a car in Armenia and a strange looking insect flew into the car. It looked a bit like some sort of wasp. It flew away before the driver saw it.

@Morleyhunt I am sure you were. I stayed at a backpackers hostel in Australia and a lady woke up with a cockroach on her pillow. She was very upset and scared.

It was enormous. There was no seeing it. Hubby had the nerve to ask me why I hadn't taken a photo.

@Morleyhunt I am glad you got rid of it and closed the doors so it cannot get in again and annoy you. I wouldn't want to take a picture of it either. I would just want it out of my life and away from me.

It could easily have caused an accident. I shudder to think about what could have happened.
