Mum - watch me hop!

I’m usually out of bed around 6 am and I’ve learnt to come out quietly and slowly checking for kangaroos in the garden. This morning, there were six or eight including a buck which was a bit unusual. Several of the does had joeys and one was out of the pouch practising his hopping. I caught 3 seconds on the video so I’ll put it up although if you blink you’ll miss it. I don't know how to cut off the rest of the video but the action is at the very beginning. Between his practice sessions, his mum would hold him and groom him, nibbling and licking through his fur. In the finish, while he was hopping, he slipped on the gravel and fell on his side. So then he went back to bed and I came back to myLot. The photo is of the two quietest ones enjoying a rest on our driveway.

@JudyEv oh, that's brilliant! what a great capture, ms. judy. jest melted my heart :) i bet such's quite the chore, gettin' those legs tucked back'n. kind'a makes ya feel fer those momma's, eh? i talked the momma 'nto gettin' her one this past year (2 elderlies livin' 'lone) 's there'd been some break-ins nearby. the front door camera covers her 'ntire front yard/drive 'n halfway through the street. she's 3'n the back/sides 'f the house. they're hooked to a live feed 'n they can see 360 'round the place all't once. the aunt can replay 'n capture pics from such. i keep hopin' the fox'll return to her bird baths, lol. would love a pic 'f such, lol. when the red pup passes, i'll prolly be lookin' 't gettin' somethin' similar here. puttin' several cameras out'n the pasture. he's my alarm if'n somethin' 'tis awry. i hope he don't pass anytime soon, but the fella 'tis 10yrs, though very healthy'n most active.

@crazyhorseladycx The cameras are a great idea. I always thought I'd like one that took night photos as so many of our little creatures are nocturnal.

A security camera is a great idea but quite possibly the action would be to one side or the other of it. But perhaps they cover quite a wide area. They all need to figure out where to put their legs, don't they? And little roos have those two long legs to try to make sense of. Here's a photo I took of the baby with his feet in the air.

They are gradually being fenced out of lots of places. We aren't trying to grow anything so they don't worry us.

That is nice of them to look at. It seems you enjoy those things all year round in your place or are they seasonal that they appear only in certain time of the year?

They come year round but not every day. Most days they spend at least some time on our land but we can't see all of it from the house. Our seasons don't really change a great deal here. Winters are mild and wet but no snow, and summers are hot and dry but there is no hibernation or migration - at least to any great degree.

I’m laying in bed and my sons in the next room sleeping so I can’t watch the video. I wonder how old the joeys are when they start trying to get out of their moms belly.

There is no sound on the video but it's okay. The babies are the size of a jelly-bean and have to crawl up the mum's tummy to the pouch. They leave the pouch for good at about 11 months but continue to suckle (by facing the doe and putting their head in the pouch) until about 18 months old.

They'd have been gone like a shot if I'd poked my head outside. We have 18 acres with a patch of bush on the property as well as on two sides of us. Here's an aerial shot of the house so yes, there are a lot of trees - more than I imagined actually.

Yes, they do except for the two that are most photographed. You can't approach them and mostly if they see you moving in the house they'll take off.

That's really cute. The best we can hope for in our garden is the odd squirrel. I do often see foxes and badgers when I'm out walking the dog in the evening though. Still not quite as exotic as kangarois.

I'd love to see a badger. Our friends went somewhere in England where they went into a hide and watched the badgers. I have a nice book about some badgers that became tame.
