Have you ever said something to someone meaning to complement them only for it to be taken the wrong way! I have a few years back not quite what is written in the picture but near enough!
Some people really are far too sensitive at times. Most people who know me know what a joker and a tease I am. Ok sometimes it is erring on the side of being juvenile but that is what I am like. I freely admit to having a mental age of an 8 year old.
For example on my facebook page I knocked 10 years off my age when I reached 50. One of my colleagues at work who does not quite appreciate my sense of humour told me to grow up and put my correct age on the page. I thought oh blow you so I took another 6 years off so I will for ever be 16 years younger as facebook warned me if I changed it again I would not be able to change it back!
My colleague no longer talks to me but I think it is hilarious and the sad thing is I am unlikely to change and will probably keep my schoolboy humour until the day I start pushing up daisies!
Have you ever said something to someone trying to be kind but it went the wrong way?

Some times it happens on the social sites because of difference in the culture and also because of misunderstand the English language I use as English is not my native language and often people misunderstand my writings which I realize later on!

@garymarsh6 , since I am from India and we are taught in English medium where we follow British English, there is no problem with the British English as I can manage with it. But it becomes bit difficult with American English ...

Yes language can be misconstrued by people especially if English is not your first language. Of course if we were sitting in front of each other talking then there are different clues to observe such as posture, facial expression, word intonation and how something is said. Whereas the written word is often flat with no intonation as to what you actually mean! As for you, I think you written English is excellent!

Yes, more times than I can count. The biggest problem here is that many of those people I worked with were learning English as a second language and sometimes I would say something I deemed normal only to have them take offense because they had to look up the words in a translator dictionary and that made what I said come out really different from what was intended.

OH yes of course that would be true because it would be given out of context.

Your colleague has zero sense of humor, I know that sometimes trying to be kind (adding a bit of humor) is not always appreciated. My niece, when it was her birthday, loved to say I am turning 18. That was fine until she was 22, 23, 24... When she turned 30 I looked at her and said "stop saying I am turning 18 if you want to hear, but you look younger". Can you believe she did not appreciated. I wanted to be nice.

I hope my niece got the message, there is nothing more ridiculous than an aged woman who wants to show up like a teenager.

@garymarsh6 I am confused as to why your colleague got uptight about this! I don't really see the harm in you doing this. I'm curious to know why this was such a big deal.
I am sure I have said some things that was taken the wrong way but I'm sorry that I cannot think of anything right now.

@garymarsh6 ah ok! I see! I know there are people like that. Again, wish I knew why but some times I don't even care to know when their behaviour is just too harsh! Well I think you're funny! I'm sorry she couldn't see the humour in it!

Good answer. Some people are just irritants and it is like holding a red rag to a bull. I totally get where you are coming from!

@garymarsh6 My daughter, bless her cotton socks, got a job going door to door selling phone contracts. She’s the kind of person who could sell combs to a bald person. A young mother asked her to come in because she was interested but her child was just out of the bath. When my daughter saw the toddler she very genuinely said, “Oh your little girl is just lovely - my youngest sister has Downs Syndrome too”, to which the horrified mother said quite curtly, “My child does NOT have Downs Syndrome”. My daughter thought it best to retreat.

OH lord! Your poor daughter. I am not surprised she scarpered bless her! Never mind! I saw a patient who was praising how good her son was. I saw she had a visitor one day and went to introduce myself and said so you must be mrs. so and so's son. My colleagues made a hasty retreat. It was a very macho looking daughter! I did not live that one down for a week or two I can tell you!
