Stuff we saw on the weekend

They were short of helpers on the weekend so we manned a point on the endurance ride track. You can see in the photo it’s just in the bush where several gravel roads met. The big, black tubs are drinking water for the horses. The buckets are water so the riders can sponge down their horses if they wish to. There is lucerne hay and carrots available too. There is also drinking water for the riders and lollies/sweets if they want them. As the riders came through our checkpoint we would note their bib number and the time. We had a two-way radio hooked up to the car battery and we would relay the information back to the ride base at the caravan park. The last photo shows a beer bottle that someone some time ago upended on a twig. The tree had now grown around it to a degree although it’s a bit hard to see here. Back at the caravan park, a lot of trees and plants have been planted by the locals. These were protected from rabbits by plastic guards and some had flowering kangaroo paws. There were also a lovely lot of wildflowers out on the ride itself. We also saw a pink and grey galahs' nest in a hollow tree.

Wow, that's stunning @JudyEv It would be the perfect plant for Christmas given the red and green foliage.

It's a kangaroo paw as the shape is a bit like a roo's paw. Here is a better photo. This is probably the largest and most spectacular but they come in other colours too.

We had most of a day to fill in before anyone else arrived so we were able to have a good wander around.

Yes, very enjoyable. The last one is in a fortnight but there is a special event this weekend that we'll go to as well.

The pink and grey galahs are very pretty - and popular as pets. They usually make good talkers although it's a shame to see them caged.

They are gum (eucalyptus) trees and yes, we still have the caravan. We stayed in it at the ride. You can see more of the trees here perhaps.

The birds are pink and grey galahs. Maybe I'll write about them. Once, they were only seen in the north but they've made their way southwards and we even have them in our area. These were in the middle of Australia on our way to Uluru.

wonderful photos I like the birds. These galahs resemble parrots. Are they related?

Wiki says that: The Galah is one of the most abundant and familiar of the Australian parrots so I guess the terms are basically interchangeable.

@cperry2 No problem. Sometimes I think I know the answer but I need to verify if I'm right or not. I wasn't trying to imply you should have looked it up.

@JudyEv I could have looked it up myself. It just looks very similar to a parrot and it can mimic human voices like a parrot. Anyway, thanks.

Usually, there is a horse rug that they receive that has the name of the ride embroidered on it and they might get some bags of horse feed.
