Okra. What's your fave?

Years ago my husband grew okra in our garden and it was always so delicious and fresh.
I hated picking it because it's prickly, but it was worth it. We haven't grown any for a long time...I would just buy the frozen breaded okra and fry that.
But now that anything with gluten is a no-no, that's off the menu.
Last week I found chopped frozen plain okra and realized I could fry it just like I used to fry okra using corn meal with salt and pepper in hot oil.
I cooked it and it was sooo good, almost (but not quite) as good as from the garden. I popped those little nuggets like candy!
Now, my question is: do you like okra? And if you do, do you fry it or boil it? To the extent that I love it fried, the polar opposite is true about boiling it. Too slimy for me.
I know this is a life changing discussion, but thank goodness not everything in life is so serious. We wouldn't survive long if it were.

Fresh from the garden is the absolute best, isn't it?

@1creekgirl Yes and another way I learned to cook it was fry whole with the end off, drain and dress with garlic and lime juice, that is sooooo good.

LOL, pop them like candy? So reminds me of me and my boy on movie night. One son and dad popped pop corn while the other one and me pop fried okra. Loved it. I don't necessarily like it boiled (okay, can't stand it) BUT I love it in soups with tomatoes as the acid in the tomatoes takes away all the slime.

@1creekgirl It really works. I wouldn't eat tomatoes and okra in rice till one day I decided to try it. Not slimy at all and so good.

You should try it sliced, mixed with corn meal and fried.

You truly don't know what you're missing. But it has to be fresh and fried crispy in corn meal.

I haven't had okra in a while. I know fried okra is a thing and I enjoyed it. It is in these wrap things that I think come from starbucks that I really like as well. So yeah, okra isn't a common thing here but I enjoy it when it happens!

I feel the same. When it's fried crispy, it's better than candy to me! Sure sorry it's off limits to you now. Is that because of the Crohn's?

Since it's not grown fresh right now, you could buy it chopped and frozen at the grocery store. Toss it with yellow corn meal (not self rising), salt and pepper, then fry it in hot oil until browned and crispy. I don't deep fry it, just enough in the pan to get it crispy with the corn meal. Hope you like it!

When Jay and I first got married(29 years ago), I'd never eaten okra. My mother hated it, so she never fixed okra with our meals. Down south, Jay's father grew okra and now, I love it! The whole frozen okra, I microwave it done. The breaded sliced okra, I fry it to a golden brown. It's my favorite vegetable!

There's a world of difference when it's fried instead of boiled. Not slimy at all that way.

I'll eat okra. As long as it's not too slimy it's OK for me. I don't make it; but I've eaten it out in restaurants, buffets, etc.

It's not a good dish for a buffet because it's better when you fry it and eat it right then.
