Short week

We are not going to be in school Friday. Teachers get a "comp day" to compensate for having evening parent teacher conferences last week. The board chose to have it the day after Halloween, so we do not have to deal with sleep deprived, sugar high kids on Friday. Yay!! This week, all week, is "Red Ribbon Week"--a week where we learn about healthy lifestyles. "Say No to Drugs", Bicycle Safety and dress up funny while we do so. Yesterday was pajama day. Kids and staff alike dressed in sleepwear, if they chose to. Monday was Wear Red day. Today is team and school spirit day. Wear favorite team clothes or school logo clothes. Thursday, Halloween, we will bring our costumes to school and dress for a parade before our parties. I just have a black cat shirt. Keeping it simple. So it is a really packed week. I am tired, it is Wednesday. Last night I was too tired to do anything online. Of course I went to bed early, then woke indecently early. Scuse me while I go copy a buffalo for an art project for my afternoon kiddo. It takes some explanation. Maybe I will share when it is done.

My afternoon kiddo is fifth grade. He is autistic and has a strong love for making things. The fourth grade social studies lessons have been about the plains. All the kids made buffalo pictures and wrote reports about them They drew their buffalo on crumpled brown paper bags and cut them out. The pictures each have a report attached and are displayed in the hall. I have been ending our school day with a little bit of art as an incentive to work hard. He has chosen to make one of the buffalo. He wants to write on a paper to go with it just like the others. I was copying a silhouette of a buffalo to give him a template, as he did not like how his was turning out freehand.

I was mentioning to another person, the idea is to crumple a brown paper bag repeatedly to give it texture, then draw a buffalo and cut it out of that paper. Another grade level had done this and displayed it in the hall and my student wanted to make the same, so we are.

I know Halloween and All Saints Day are religious holidays, but I have not known anyone who was observant since I was a kid.

@GardenGerty In all Catholic European countries the 1st of November is a holiday, the 2nd is not a holiday, those who like go to visit the tombs of their relatives. I know that in your country you do not celebrate it. Mexicans celebrate both the 1st and November 2nd (Dia de Muertos).

Great idea not to have school Friday. We have school Friday. I was hoping not to work Hallowe'en or the day after, but due to circumstances beyond my control I haven't worked this week so I can't say no if called.

So did you get called? When I was subbing that would have been my luck.

Our teachers had to work some evening hours for conferences with working parents. They are entitled to a comp day. District chose to make the comp day the day after Halloween. Good planning.
