Black is Black

But according to the Universities and Colleges Union in the UK that isn't necessarily the case. This particular body, which represents 120, 000 UK academics, is taking the stance that people should be able to self-identify as any gender, sexual orientation or even race. They are even suggesting that you can self-identify as disabled!! So folks, I, as a white, heterosexual, able-bodied male could self-identify as a black, one-legged, lesbian female and be taken seriously by these so-called intelligent people. They should be self-identifying as unfit to hold any position of authority instead of being responsible for the education of our youth. I really have never heard of anything so outrageous and utterly ridiculous. I haven't got any time for this sort of nonsense. I have to go to get fitted for a new dress with my girlfriend before seeing a specialist about a prosthetic leg, then it's a trip to the solicitors to see about reparations for the enforced servitude of my ancestors.

What is the reasoning behind these suggestions? Please enlighten me even though you don't share it. This kind of discussion seems to be a speciality of English speaking countries. I haven't come across anything like it in Germany. I can even say 'blind' without people attacking me like hawks. The only word I can think of which one shouldn't use is the 'n' word for black people. The word 'cripple' should also be taboo but many handicapped people use it themselves. They claim that that is what they are and that other terms don't improve their situation in any way.

The reason? People educated beyond their level of intelligence who have nothing better to do than attempt to impose their warped view of the world on everyone else. They inhabit their elitist echo chambers and have no idea, and don't actually care, how 'ordinary' people think because 'ordinary' people are less educated than them and need to be told what to think.

@JudyEv Indeed. I certainly wouldn't advocate intentionally being hurtful to anyone but some people seriously need to get a grip on themselves and reality.

I agree that we should choose our words carefully but nothing changes their actual situation. They are what they are however it's called.

Do those people identify themselves as disabled because they have no brain?

@LadyDuck But they tell each other they are so they must be because everyone they know says so.

Sadly no. They self-identify as intelligent when there is no actual evidence for their claim.

As the only specific mention of this I can find on searching for it seems to come from a Daily Mail article, I snort in incredulity (because that's what the Mail intends people to do) and pass on. The Mail is not a very good source of information, in my opinion, and I think that the story arises out of a much broader discussion by the UCU committee about so-called "harrassment" of academics who feel that their freedon of expression is not being properly protected.

I saw this reported on ITV. They were brandishing a newspaper which wasn't the Mail although as I was listening more than watching I didn't notice which one it was. Let's face it when it comes to freedom of expression it's normally the more conservative academics and students who require that right to be protected not the baying SJW mob.

Apparently so! But what is typically me? The answer is quite simply whatever I decide it is and you can't deny it because you might hurt my feelings.

I think the media give too much coverage to this sort of thing. We should follow my 3 step plan to ridding the world of dangerous ideological nonsense: 1. Point. 2. Laugh. 3. Ignore.

That’s absurd! Don’t they have a call of that? Cultural appropriation? I’m not sure if that’s related to your post.

That's an excellent point and one which I'd completely overlooked. Maybe cultural appropriation is when someone utilises something from a culture without self-identifying as being from that culture. I'm sure they'll have some form of logical gymnastics to justify their hypocrisy.

@WorDazza either way, it’s hypocrisy. A lot of people are doing cultural appropriation. Don’t you think, this is the opposite of what you discussed here?

@mlgen1037 I think self-identifying as another race is essentially the same thing as cultural appropriation.

Don't get me started on this topic. Surely anyone with half a brain is going to self-identify as whatever is most advantageous to them at the time, for whatever reason. As to the whole black/white thing, I really hate the way that anyone who isn't 100% Caucasian is identified as 'black'. There are not that many people who are really black. Most people are a sort of brownish colour. And it annoys me even more that people who have one so-called 'black' parent and one so-called 'white' parent (think Barack Obama or Meghan Markle) are also called 'black', essentially writing one of their parents out of their lives.

@WorDazza Thirty years ago or so I remember a friend suggesting there should be a generic title for 'person' (maybe 'Pr'?) to avoid the whole Mr/Miss/Mrs problem. She was way ahead of her time. Maybe we can spread the idea now?

I've often wondered how the caucasian parent feels in that situation. As you rightly say some people are going to identify as whatever they feel is best for them and this can only lead to a situation where you don't have a clue how they're identifying from one day to the next depending upon their current whim. That could be very dangerous if the so-called progressives get their way and mis-gendering becomes an offense.

I agree with you. This entire thing is going too far. If I get a tan in Florida and fall off my bicycle, I could then consider myself a disabled black woman.

@DianneN That sort of nonsense is given way more exposure than it warrants. The vast majority of people feel the same way we do but universities and the media is infested with politically correct types who get to push their warped agenda on students and the rest of us.
