Using tags on MyLot

Now and then I wonder whether some people make the best use of the 'tags' feature on MyLot, so I thought I'd just write a quick post.
The 'tags' feature allows you to add up to five 'tags' to a post. These act as 'key words' which help to identify the post and group it with other posts given the same tags. Readers can click on any of the tags and be taken to a list of posts with the same tag.
Let's assume you write about a certain subject, for example your favourite recipe for pickled walnuts which you got from your granny. If you give it a tag such as 'Grandma's pickled walnuts', then if a reader clicks on that tag they will probably not find many other posts on that subject. However it is a good way for a reader to find a specific post they are looking for.
If you use tags such as 'Grandparents' and 'recipe' and pickles' and 'walnuts' then a reader can click on any one of those tags and be presented with a list of posts given the same tag. That way they might find other posts on subjects that interest them, so for example if they clicked 'walnuts' they might find other recipes for walnuts or stories about walnut trees or whatever other people have written.
Tags are also a great way of connecting a series of posts together, so for example if you regularly write posts about your pets as well as other subjects, then if you use the tag 'pets' your posts will come up in a list along with other posts with the same tag, but if you use a specific name such as 'Fluffy' then clicking that tag will take the reader to all posts about Fluffy. It's a useful way of following a series of stories by the same MyLotter without having to search through every single post they have written on other subjects.
Hope this helps someone!

@Fleura A lot of mine I tag with Western Australia as I'm often checking back to see if I wrote about a certain subject. But now, nearly all the 'you might like this' suggestions on the side panels are my own posts. Which I'm not fussed about reading again!

i've notice so many people screw up the tags, and not just on myLot. people will write all their tags in one tag, making them useless. Or they will write nonsensical tags that no one would ever think to search. Or some people tag things that have nothing to do with the post they're making. Drives me cuckoo, I hope someone learns from your post

I use tags to connect a post series or to help me find my posts later. The tags also help connect the related discussions you see on the sidebar.

I don't usually give much thought to tags, although I do understand their purpose and do use them. But you actually gave me a new way to find older, lost posts when I get bored with the other ways I find things to read and comment on. Thanks for some very useful information.
