Using tags on MyLot

Now and then I wonder whether some people make the best use of the 'tags' feature on MyLot, so I thought I'd just write a quick post. The 'tags' feature allows you to add up to five 'tags' to a post. These act as 'key words' which help to identify the post and group it with other posts given the same tags. Readers can click on any of the tags and be taken to a list of posts with the same tag. Let's assume you write about a certain subject, for example your favourite recipe for pickled walnuts which you got from your granny. If you give it a tag such as 'Grandma's pickled walnuts', then if a reader clicks on that tag they will probably not find many other posts on that subject. However it is a good way for a reader to find a specific post they are looking for. If you use tags such as 'Grandparents' and 'recipe' and pickles' and 'walnuts' then a reader can click on any one of those tags and be presented with a list of posts given the same tag. That way they might find other posts on subjects that interest them, so for example if they clicked 'walnuts' they might find other recipes for walnuts or stories about walnut trees or whatever other people have written. Tags are also a great way of connecting a series of posts together, so for example if you regularly write posts about your pets as well as other subjects, then if you use the tag 'pets' your posts will come up in a list along with other posts with the same tag, but if you use a specific name such as 'Fluffy' then clicking that tag will take the reader to all posts about Fluffy. It's a useful way of following a series of stories by the same MyLotter without having to search through every single post they have written on other subjects. Hope this helps someone!

You do see some really strange tags. This is a great article. I hope those that need it read it.

I've certainly seen some very odd uses, and wondered why the writer bothered as surely they couldn't be useful. Of course those people probably won't read this!

@Fleura A lot of mine I tag with Western Australia as I'm often checking back to see if I wrote about a certain subject. But now, nearly all the 'you might like this' suggestions on the side panels are my own posts. Which I'm not fussed about reading again!

Congratulations for this very clear explanation on how to use tags and why they are important. I did it wrong the first day I joined myLot, but JJ immediately helped me. Many people still do not use tags or use them wrong.

They can be a very useful tool, but not if they are far too vague or too specific.

i've notice so many people screw up the tags, and not just on myLot. people will write all their tags in one tag, making them useless. Or they will write nonsensical tags that no one would ever think to search. Or some people tag things that have nothing to do with the post they're making. Drives me cuckoo, I hope someone learns from your post

I use tags to connect a post series or to help me find my posts later. The tags also help connect the related discussions you see on the sidebar.

I do use tags, especially if I'm writing on a subject I've written about before. Also they're helpful for keeping my poems all in one place.

As you say, people seem to just put random sentences sometimes! I think they're a useful way of linking posts together if you have a series, for example.

I never use tags. I could argue that it's because my discussions are uncategorisable (is that a word??) but the reality is far simpler. I just can't be bothered.

I didn't at first, then I realised how useful they could be for linking posts together.

I don't usually give much thought to tags, although I do understand their purpose and do use them. But you actually gave me a new way to find older, lost posts when I get bored with the other ways I find things to read and comment on. Thanks for some very useful information.
