i bumped into someone i used to work with. he now works for a classmate who couldn't manage their family's gas delivery business. i told fred i'm not really surprised. i've always felt that his personality was suited for business. i could not picture him as an office employee until retirement. the same thing happened to our doctor before he set up his own clinic here. he had a classmate whose family had their own hospital in the province. he said his classmate only went to med school because it was expected he would suceed his father. but he never really did well, according to Dr. J, so Dr. J. accepted his offer to run their rural hospital for several years. have you ever helped someone run their business? do you have a family business but don't want to inherit it?

I helped managed my father's business in Sta. Cruz , Manila when I was 16 or 17 cause the school I went to only had classes in the afternoon for 3rd and 4th year. When I was 10 to 14 years old I accompanied my uncle on weekends in my father's branch in what was the old Cartimar in Pasay city, I did not do managing there but I hang out in the pet shops most of the time learning about fishes and other animals lol, I also roamed around the PX ( imported goods) stores looking at my favorite Adidas shoes, GI Joe's and other toy soldiers.

I think it is a great shame when parents push a particular career on to a child. Imagine working all your life at a career that didn't give you any pleasure.

for some, it's law, another course that takes time, money and effort on both parents and student. dr. j told me he actually wanted to be a lawyer.

It is a burden, inherited a business isn't it. I rejected a suitor long time ago because of his family business.

@hereandthere The guy told me what I was supposed to do to help him after we married: I should produce children like rabbits, then we would go to church every day with the children, then the children would in time take over the family business in building blah blah blah... I ran so fast from that guy and still thank God every day of my life .

My last job I practically ran the business (I was the only employee). In the end my boss actually wanted to GIVE me his business (he was diagnosed with cancer and I had no idea at the time - found out about it years later) . . . yes, he literally wanted me to take over. But I refused the offer - I didn't want it.

@hereandthere I could run it, but I didn't want to. I quit the job because I was about to have my first child . . . it was time for me to become a full time mom - I did not want to compromise my time and energy to run this business. I think he ended up running it for another 3 years after I left - and then he passed away . . . I believe his kids inherited the building/business but most likely sold it.

I can say that I have helped my husband. When I was working in the office where he was an associate, he asked me if I would have followed him and become his assistant when he opened his own cabinet. I did.

you have a great partnership. i remember you said he wants a problem-solver and he only wants you to be his assistant, he doesn't want to hire a secretary.

I have my own bakery business in the Philippines I manage that even I was here in Europe but I need to stop because of family issues. It's not easy to manage a business if you are too far from your business.

Not at this moment. But entrusting the business with a friend or someone you knew takes a lot of courage. And of course, trust. If the person is trustworthy why not ask help.
