Illinois Still Cracks Me Up When It Snows

It's wall to wall coverage. Cars in ditches, devastation, store closings, school closings, people are trapped in their homes, get all the bread, eggs, and supplies you can. We'll be down for at least a day and a half. This town is CRAZY. It's like they have never seen snow before. Being a Wisconsinite it's just another day. I currently live in the St. Louis metro area on the Illinois side. People, really? My God. My photo is from the blizzard of 2011 in West Allis, a suburb of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Great times in the photo. So, how much snow caused all that devastation?

I can't remember exactly how much we got. But when I opened the garage door the snow was up above the levels of the hood of the cars. That year, if I remember right, we got almost 160 inches for the winter total. That was back in 2011.

@porwest That's a lot of snow. I was wondering though how much you were talking about that caused the general mayhem for the moment.

@just4him Oh. lol. Yes. That makes perfect sense. We got about 4 inches when all was said and done.

@porwest That`s right! So when they say snow people panic, especially if they lived through the BLIZZARD of 1993. that was waist deep snow.

You'd think! I live in northern Colorado and it's the same here, where it snows a lot. Every time a decent storm comes along, people panic. Grocery stores are sold out of milk and bread and people forget how to drive. It's crazy. We blame it on the out of staters, but we know that isn't true!

I thought you Yankees were used to dealing with snow, unlike we southerners who lose our minds completely after the third snowflake.

Well, that's exactly my point. I am from Wisconsin, so snow is just another day during winter (and sometimes part of spring and fall). It's these southern Illinois folk that lose their minds. It is completely hysterical to me.

@porwest I grew up in Minneapolis and they would not close unless there was an absolute blizzard. Here our winters in Jerusalem consist of rain and cold weather. So far December has not been back. I read today that winter and rain will be returning on Tuesday. We will see.

@porwest I am glad to be away from Minneapolis winters. They were too long and thought they would never end.We have winter here in Jerusalem but not harsh like the ones I grew up with. I know winter will end here.

@Hannihar It was like that in Wisconsin too. We had 11 months of winter and 1 month of summer. Or so, at least that is the way it felt.

Yeah. I am from Wisconsin and it was pretty much the same there. But even in a blizzard the town was up and running in hours. Life must go on and we just knew how to do it.

Maybe we have to learn that new climate that is hitting the world. I find the weather so crazy in the past few years.

I guess it boils down to what you're used to.

They nuts around here when we get anything more than a couple of inches. We are right next to the ocean so that usually keeps us too warm for snow. Tonight most of NJ is getting snow but it is just raining outside here.

People are over reacting more and more over weather. It snows during winter and it's calamity.
