Unwanted gifts, what do you do with them?

Don't get me wrong, I am always grateful that people think of me at Christmas time and might buy me a small gift but sometimes I receive presents that I know I will never use.
Rather than throw them to the back of the cupboard and forget about them I will try to reuse them. Sometimes my granddaughter's school will ask for donations for a sale they might have so I can send it there for someone who might buy it. Other times I may use it as a present for someone that I think it might be more suitable for.
I don't know if any of you receive gifts you know you won't use but if you do what do you do with them?

I think that's a good idea. It's all too easy to put them away and forget about them.

I often do that and I hope that they like it.

@mrki444 I got a gift set with shower gel that makes my skin itch. I think I am allergic to it.
I just realised who you are. I didn't realise you were so young

@divalounger You'll have a lovely clean and tidy house after. I need to do that.

I do sometimes, but very rarely. It depends on what the item is as to what I will do with it.
A friend bought me a body wash for Christmas and I don't like the scent very much. Instead of putting it in the cupboard and forgetting about it, I have decided to use it as a hand soap instead. It will get used and not sit and go to waste.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Yes sometimes I discover products covered in dust that have been on the top shelf

Good idea. These things often double up. If I run out of bubble bath I will use my liquid hand soap to make a bit of froth.

@sprite1950 Yes, I have done the same or used dish soap once or twice. Yesterday I got rid of some of the older products that I, nor anyone else has used in years. They were stuck up on the top shelf where no one could see them.

Yes I think when it's family they don't mind if you want to exchange it.

@sprite1950 I remember that one year my mom bought for me a beautiful night gown, I loved the style, the fabric, the shape, but not at all the light purple colour. We went two days after to the store and I picked up a colour that I liked more.

@LadyDuck That was lucky. Colour is important in our clothes.

That must be wonderful. My close family know what I like but friends don't always choose well. I am grateful that they think of me though.

@sprite1950 It’s the thought that counts. Sorry for the platitude, but it’s true.

It's not too bad if you just use it on your hands as the smell soon wears off. I can't use perfumed products on my face though as my skin is sensitive.

Yes. I feel a bit mean giving them away when someone has taken the time to choose a gift for me but it's better than never being used.

@rakski Sometimnes when I go through my cupboard I will find a gift that I had forgotten about. It has been there for a whole year.

@sprite1950 true, same with me. It will just sit here in the house with dust so I prefer giving it to someone who will be able to use it

I either give it away to a charity, or give it to my mother if she wants it.

I just got two unwanted gifts. One is some kinda spray. I don't do perfumes or sprays, so not sure what to do with it. Don't want to keep it but can't bring myself to trash it. And another gift is a fake handbag. That one I kinda want to give back to the person that gave it to me as I don't want to use it but I don't want to hurt that person's feelings. Not sure what to do here.

You could maybe donate them to a charity shop. I'm sure that someone would buy them.

@lovebuglena I think it's ok as at least it would get used instead of being wasted and as long as the person who gave it to you doesn't know, no one gets hurt.

If I were to get a gift I don't want, I would either sell it, or give it away, depending what it is.

Most of them aren't worth selling as they are too small so I either donate them or regift them.

I think that's the best idea. If you give it to someone else you run the risk of giving it back to the same person because you forget who gave it to you!

I have a cabinet drawer that is filled with unused gifts particularly shirts, hankies, socks. Last November I had posted in Facebook that I have so many shirts and I requested that people do not give me shirts anymore.
