Using something I learned in high school to sell speakers

Back in high school days, one of my teachers presented a lecture on advertising. It was something I hadn't thought much about, but for some reason, the lecture stuck with me. Recently, I listed a pair of vintage loudspeakers on Craigslist. One of the things we learned about in that advertising lecture was "snob appeal"--you tie your product in with a certain lifestyle. I decided to try "snob appeal" when I listed my ADS 400 speakers on Craigslist. I photographed them with a Martin D-18 leaning against them. Of course, the implication is that ADS 400s will appeal to those who play elite musical instruments. Do you think it will work? Do you like the picture? Can you think of examples of "snob appeal" you've seen in advertising? One that comes to mind for me is a TV ad for BMW cars with Vivaldi playing in the background.

I should think this would work well but not really with me as I don't recognise guitar brands. But the idea is well worth remembering.

Some audio geeks might. I've sold several sets of speakers to fellow musicians.

Thanks, Carol. We'll see what happens. Sometimes patience is necessary with Craigslist.

I don't know... when I see a hollow body guitar I think "acoustic" so what good would speakers do (they're not the best guitar stands, are they?)

I scrolled down to check the opinion of the other myLotters and I fully agree with Maluse. The carpet ruins the scene, it does not have at all a "snob appeal". I would also take the photo more from the front, placing behind a neutral background.

But it's a genuine Indian carpet, bought on the Flathead Indian Reservation. It shown I'm well-traveled--a man of means. I can tell it's authentic because it says "Made in India" right on the label!

It should appeal well. There's another car commercial where the driver is dressed to the nines and is very classy. That commercial tells me the car is out of my league.

Heh heh. It would tell me it's not my kind of car. I'm a pick-up or SUV kind of person.

It's a neat little rug. Funny that they presented as an authentic Indian (Flathead) rug, but a closer look reveals it was "Made in India."
