How I almost wrecked a car today

I have mention in previous posts how breaks in routine sometimes cause minor disasters. If I have an extra guitar here, I might trip over said extra guitar do a face plant, sending me to the hospital. And so on. Today, I was leaving my parking space, heading out to buy some groceries. I almost ran into the car to my right as I was exiting my parking space. Why? Because my steering when was cranked all the way to the left. Why was my steering wheel cranked all the way to the left? Because I had given Horse Jr. a driving lesson yesterday, and had let him park the car. I always straighten my wheels before I turn off the engine. He did not. So many things we do on a day-to-day basis are "automatic," coded in our "cerebellum," the part of our brain that controls body posture and "habits." Fortunately, today, I was "paying attention," and was able to brake and straighten my steering wheel before I exited my parking space. Have you ever had guests, and tripped over their suitcases, or some such? We are creatures of habit, and when the "unusual" is a part of our "scene," it easy to make mistakes that can cause injury, or at least frustration.

Just like dogs and cats we are creatures of habit and don't like changes in our routines.

I agree. I have dreams of having moved to a larger space, and I inevitably wake up feeling relieved that I am still here in my little cucoon.

Glad you avoided an accident. The door frames in my house are always moving right towards me, which of course I can't avoid.

@TheHorse Ha, maybe I could avoid a collision with some new "meds."

Why are they moving? Do you take LSD daily and not tell us?

I can move through my house in the dark, but I have to remind myself when I’ve moved something.

Yep, me too. I've even sliced my ankle open (not severe) when I forgot to latch my guitar case.

@FourWalls That' not exactly what I said, but...well, you get the idea.

I wonder why the steering wheel developed that problem of being stubborn just because the car was parked with the wrong position of the steering wheel.

@TheHorse maybe you need to have the steering checked for it may pose a danger to your driving.

@Alexandoy The steering wheel is fine. The young lad simply did not straighten it out after he parked the car.

Having guests certainly interrupts routines. I guess I notice it most if they insist on helping in the kitchen and they put things away in the wrong place. I'm not complaining about it as most stuff goes in the dish-washer but it is something I notice.

@JudyEv Yeppers, that's my philosophy. But I HAVE been throwing out empty envelopes recently.

Heh heh. Yes, that's a good example. If someone other than me organized my desk, I would never find anything.

@TheHorse Vince's desk was always a mess but he reckoned he could put his hand on anything he was looking for.

We sure are. I have tripped over my OWN guitar when I came home late from a gig and put it 3" from where I usually put it.

You are right about this, automatic gestures that we repeat all the time. I remember one day we went out to dine with a friend and his wife. My husband and his wife sit in the back of the car I sit in front with him. We arrived at the parking, he got the parking ticket and automatically gave it to me as he always do with his wife. I am glad I remembered to give it back to him, because we stopped overnight at the hotel where we dined.

It really is. I think it's interesting that our habits are stored in a particular part of our brain.

@TheHorse Take care of yourself. You are right we do things a certain way and someone else may not do them that same way.
