New Year's Day Food!

Do you or your family observe a traditional meal for New Year's Day? We do! I have mine on now and we will have a late lunch and dinner combined. Everyone slept late, so the whole timing of today is off. That's okay as nobody has anyplace to go. I just put my ham in the oven and have black eye peas on the stove top. I'll put on the cabbage in a few minutes. That won't take long at all. I had to call my hubby in to hold the pan while I rinsed the ham off after taking it out of the package as I had dishes drying in the other side of the sink. He comes to the rescue and asked why I bought such a big ham. I told him it was the smallest one they had. This ham is right under 12 pounds! There was another lady also looking for a small ham when I bought this one. Most of them were in the 15 to 16 pound range or even larger! What is your traditional New Year's Day meal and does it have a special meaning? I have heard of several different combinations. The one I mentioned above is supposed to bring you Health, Wealth and Happiness. Happy New Year everyone! Photo Credit: Pixabay, public domain

Yup. Ours is supposed to bring good luck. We are having pork and sauerkraut. The pork butt roast is massive too...12 pounds. It has a long time to cook. Probably be a late dinner.

Happy New Year! We aren’t big on ham, but it sounds delicious. We are having some of a roast chicken, salad, and veggies. I started a diet today.

We have always stuck to the same thing because hubby's mom fixed the exact same thing. It's not bad if you don't fix a ham for Christmas. That would be a lot of ham!

I'm always at Disney during the New Years celebration, so I don't ever fix any traditional meals. Some years we make dining reservations and eat formal meals while at Disney, and other years (like today) we just grab something quick from the quick-service dining options. I had Mickey waffles for breakfast this morning, and a grilled chicken sandwich for lunch. I just realized how late it is (8:15pm as I type this), and I haven't had dinner yet. Haven't really been that hungry.

I forget about eating when I'm busy and I imagine having fun at Disney would be the same. I haven't been there in 40 or more years!

@kareng My daughter is like that. When we’re at Disney she’ll go the whole day without eating. My son and I are the opposite...we want food every 10 minutes!

I don't have a special New Year's Day meal. I'm not superstitous. My Pop-Pop always used to have herring on Jan 1. Some Nordic/Swedish thing. It didn't flow through the generations though

The black eye peas were delicious and very little of them left. I cut off a couple of thick slabs of ham and threw in them while they were cooking.

That's a big ham. I can't recall mom ever having a traditional meal but I do know she'd always make black eyed peas. I don't have a tradition and I didn't have black eyed peas, I don't like them.

We usually decided a few days ahead what we will have for our first meal of the year. We do not have any traditions. Although I cannot eat ham, your meal sounds nice. My husband asked me to do a whole chicken (just a little one) and potatoes, gravy and vegetables. I have some fresh apple tarts baking in the oven right now. The chicken will be done in the instapot, it should only take about 23 minutes the recipe tells me.

@kareng We always have our first dessert of the year to be apple something. And tarts are much smaller then a pie and leave much less leftovers.

We also have to serve pork, a cooked ham or a "cotechino" (large Italian sausage) with lentils, to bring good luck and money for the year.
