Thank Goodness for Surge Protectors

Just heard a huge clap of thunder and a boom sound with lightning. I heard something pop inside. I thought, oh no, my computer. Checked the circuit breaker box and there was one tripped. I flipped the switch and now all is good. I also have several of these surge protectors just for weather like this. Everything is safe now. Still sheets of rain and gusty wind coming through. Now more thunder, but hopefully it will pass soon. Thank goodness the power is still on as well. Many trees down in the area but safe here for now.

Any reports of tornados touching down in your immediate area?

@CarolDM Why are people even out trying to drive in that weather?

Nothing yet, power outages, ambulance rollover, and many cars in ditches. But no deaths that I know of. Still early.

I wonder how that make the switch trip.

From the lightning. The role of a circuit breaker is to trip and disconnect the circuit when there’s a sudden large surge of current coming in, in order to protect the electrical appliances.

@CarolDM It's just amazing someone thought a way to do that in the first place.

I love surge protectors and only found out about them last October. We have a few scattered around the house because we often get thunder and lightning as well as random power outages.

@CarolDM Wow, really!? I honestly thought they were unique to Southern Africa, where I live because we have power outages all the time. I have to say they are a neat little invention.

I have a couple of surge protectors too. I could use one for the whole house though. I got a bit worried with all the wind last night, I thought it might bring down some trees.

so glad y'ave those, hon. i'm thankful they're cheap'n price, lol. well, compared to the 'olden days' anyhow. when we've storms, i jest unplug. saturday here 'twas a day 'f intermittent power blips due to the winds i reckon. thankfully there'd be no mass 'f native trees 'round these parts to fear, jest those we've planted. 'nly one 'tis near a power line. hopefully y'ave clear skies today.

Those things do protect our sensitive electronics. I've got them all over the place, but also to able to plug 100 things into the same outlet.

i remember when we first started using them (surge protectors) I had a neighbor with a brand new Macintosh that blew everything because no surge protector. insurance only pays part of computer costs!

@CarolDM in fact it does. Plugging them into each other increases fire risk as well I just learned that from a fire here in Maryland/
