My next digital problem

My next problem - if anyone fancies helping me with technological things - is a simple way to record audio. I thought I’d ask here since @myklj999 managed to solve my last digital dilemma! It used to be easy to pop a blank cassette in the player and press 'record'. Now with all the digital shenanigans available, I can't find a simple way that doesn't involve several types of gadgets and two or three different computer programs and a lot of time transferring the data from one type of file to another. All I wanted to do was to make a recording of me reading a favourite bedtime story. About 6 years have passed since I first attempted this, with help from my partner, but I haven't found a simple way yet that isn't incredibly labour-intensive and/or restricted to one device which then becomes inaccessible or obsolete! Any practical and not overly-complicated suggestions would be very welcome! All rights reserved. © Text copyright Fleur 2020. Image from Pixabay.

wow, i see those fella's jumped'n to give ya various options. that wave thingy sounds most interestin'. i might e'en look 'nto such myself. i'm with ya, 'tis way more complicated 'n ought not be so. the bad thingy 'bout copyin' to cd's 'tis that eventually those fail to work, too. i've found that out the hard way. 'twas not audio lost, but thousands 'f pics that're now not readable. most depressin'.

Crazy? May I ask what you mean when you say a cd of pictures was rendered unreadable? What type of cd did you use? (Brand name, please.) What format were the pictures in on the cd? And how did you load the pictures onto the cd? I can't guarantee I can help you reconstruct the data from the cd but I'd certainly be willing to share possible solutions with you. (Although I do remember your hesitation to download apps to do the job easily so a solution that would work for everyone else might not work for you, though. I guess it would depend on how important the photos on the corrupted cd are to you.) Long time, no see. How have you been doing?

@crazyhorseladycx I'm very sorry to hear your health has been deteriorating, Dearheart... I wish there were something I could suggest to fix that problem, too. Pretty and I are doing okay... A few things beyond our control but nothing that anyone can help us with. Now, there are a few possible solutions for making a stubborn cd/dvd give up its stored data at least once... the best written of these (without me trying to write it for you myself) is here: Note: Yes, this does say to fix a scratched cd/dvd but the recovery methods are valid for most recovery problems. Please note the precautions/contraindications listed in these instructions. If there is anything else I can do for you, you have my email address and are welcome to use it at any time.

I've never recorded anything online. I hope you find an easy answer.

@Fleura Oh. I definitely don't have an answer, not that I did, but I wouldn't know where to begin.

I see the suggestion of JJ and I am sure that this is the simplest way. You can take a video using your smartphone and upload the video to YouTube.

That does seem awfully convoluted, I was hoping to find something simpler!

@Fleura A microphone attached to your computer sounds easier? This should work, but only for the audio. If you have a camera attached to your computer this should also work. Many laptops come with an integrated camera.

I’m no help, but I understand your dilemma. Nothing seems simple with technology today.

Thanks. It seems awfully difficult to find some format where you can record and then just play it straight back, without having to download it to something, transform the data into some other format, convert it to a different type of file and then copy it onto some sort of storage device that isn't going to break or become obsolete within six months! I still have a cassette recording somewhere of a conversation between myself and my parents when I was about three years old, and I still have the means to listen to it! But this is not the case for things I have attempted to record in the last 6 years.

I though ` new technology' was meant to make lifer easier for us all, but it seems to make even a simple thing like that even more complicated than it should be. Sorry I cannot help on this one.
