Another filling for my granddaughter

My granddaughter is 13 and at this point in her life she doesn't care about cleaning her teeth. It drives me insane as we went to the dentist yesterday and she has a second filling in one of her back teeth. I had a lot of problems with my own teeth, many fillings and a lot of toothache so I don't want the same for her. I found something called "fuzzy brushes" which are little brushes you can chew and they clean your teeth. They don't however contain fluoride so they do not have the same effect as brushing. If anyone has any ideas on how I can get her to take care of her teeth I would be really grateful as constant nagging just isn't working.

Is there a reason why she does not want to brush her teeth? May be she considers it's a waste of time. Did the dentist told her what she risks not brushing? You need the help of her dentist to win this battle. Anyway, I think that she will eventually grow out of it and become a teeth-cleaning adult, just be patient.

@LadyDuck Dentists do something new now. They coated her teeth with something and told her not to eat or drink for 30 minutes, It is some sort of solution they coat their teeth with to prevent cavities. I am going to get her some fluoride mouthwash too.

@sprite1950 They do the same here, I have this treatment ever time I go for tooth cleaning, but they tell me not to eat or drink for one hour, it is a fluoride treatment.

@sprite1950 She should think twice, if she wants nice teeth, she needs the brace and she needs to brush her teeth.

@sprite1950 Kids in those years are a little irresponsible, it's all normal. They have no time

I honestly think it's just laziness on her part but I don't want her to lose her teeth at an early age.

@sprite1950 Of course, understandable. I think conversation helps a lot, to children should always talk, talk, talk ... sometimes I used to sound like a parrot to myself when my daughter was younger

It's weird how young people hate cleaning their teeth! You almost have to force them to do it. I've never heard of those fuzzy brushes but they sound brilliant.

Well they're better than nothing but not as good as brushing your teeth with toothpaste. People usually use them for camping trips or similar where there might not be water available.

@Lushlala Yes they would be perfect for something like that. but they are quite expensive to buy on a long term basis.

@sprite1950 Ah! They'd be good for long haul flights then - for those of us who can't afford to travel first or business class.

Why in the world would she not want to brush her teeth? That just doesn't seem right. I assume she's hitting puberty now, since she's 13. Doesn't she like boys? Doesn't she want a boy to be attracted to her?

Yes she has periods now (too much information?) so hygiene is very important. She had one boyfriend which lasted all of 2 days but she would rather be with her girlfriends right now which I don't mind. She's very pretty and boys look at her but she doesn't seem that interested yet,

@moffittjc Yes she's still very much for her friends and they like to practice makeup and go shopping together. She has a lot of friends which is nice. I hope the boy thing comes a bit later, less for me to worry about!

@sprite1950 Girls that age are definitely like that. They're starting to become interested in boys, yet are still not interested in boys, if that makes sense.

I was much the same at that age and have lived to regret it. Do you know anyone with dentures that might tell her a few of the disadvantages of not looking after her teeth?

Yes me! That doesn't bother her either. I suppose when we are that age we think it will never happen.

@JudyEv Been there done that! She really doesn't care and the stupid thing is her breath doesn't smell as far as I can tell. Maybe when her friends mention it or start backing away she will take notice

I think at some point she will figure it out on her own, or maybe she won't. Either way, she's going to have some terrible teeth very early in life. Some kids you just can't convince no matter how hard you might try.

@porwest She's had two fillings already which she hated. You think she would remember that and want to avoid it in future.

@sprite1950 Very sad. Unfortunately she won't get the idea until her mouth hurts and she has to spend a lot of time in a dental chair eventually.

Is it really that common? I don't remember what I was like at that age but I have had a lot of toothache over the years. I think I would rather be in labour as at least you know yu will get something nice at the end of it

@crossbones27 Sounds like you had it tough. She is terrible with sweets and will get hold of them even if I don't buy them. I have tried bribing her but nothing works. I just don't want her to have the pain of toothache but maybe she is going to have to find out the hard way.

@crossbones27 i find sweet wrappers all over her bedroom, down the side of the bed even so I know she does it in secret. To make it worse she doesn't like vegetables although she does eat some food that is good for her. At the moment she is still slim but I wonder what she will be like if she carries on. She has hit puberty now and that can be a time when they put on weight.

@sprite1950 I had a quack dentist when i was growing up that kept telling me my teeth were fine and when I grew up I had to pay for his mistake and I make sure I take care of my teeth now. Try telling her how important your teeth are for chewing and tell her what happened to you with your teeth. Maybe it will scare her into taking care of hers.

@nela13 I have tried all that and she really doesn't care but yesterday she had her filling and she really hated it so we went to the chemist shop and bought a toothpaste of her choice and a new toothbrush so we will see if things improve.
