Howard Kirby is one man who is at peace with himself after he made the decision to return over $43,000 dollars that his daughter in law found inside of a box that was inside a couch that he purchased from a Habitat For Humanity Restore in Owosso Michigan last December.
Since Howard bought the couch and it was in his possession, his attorney advised him that he had the legal right to keep the money under the possession rule.
Howard decided even though the money was legally his, he wanted to be sure that the original owner of the couch who was Kim Fauth-Newberry whose late grandfather Phillip Fauth who passed away in 2019. had the money hidden inside a box where his couch was since I guess he did not trust banks to handle his money.
Habitat For Humanity store manager Rick Merling was able to track down Kim to inform her that her late grandfather\s money was being returned to her family since Howard did not want to have a large amount of money that was not his bothering his conscience that someone who really could use the money would be shortchanged because of an error of behalf of one their relatives.
Kim thanked Howard for being honest and returning the money that belonged to her late grandfather.
As we can see, there are some honest people in this world after all.

I know what you mean since the money he found what legally his. However he did the right thing by giving the money back since he knows he will be blessed later on.

@Mike197602 The same with me even though I have never found a huge amount of money on the street or inside a box.

I agree with you since doing what is right is better than having a guilty conscience for stealing.

@Nakitakona That is true since my late mom said "Money is of the Devil."

20 years ago I worked in a supermarket as a summer job.
It got broken into and they stole the takings from the safe around £50,000 as it hadn't been correctly banked (the manager was sacked).
A few days later the money was handed in as someone doing the bins found the money where it was dumped when the police came.
At the time I thought the person was a fool and should have kept the money...now I think they were very decent handing it in...and also foolish as they should have kept it

I know what you mean since doing what is right is a very hard road to take but doing what is right gives me peace of mind that I did not steal money that is not mine in the first place.

@Deepizzaguy I would agree with that
If you do get money by dishonest means it is somehow tainted and I do believe something will come around and bite you in some way.

@Hannihar You are right since if you and I follow the laws of good living, we are called "soft." by our enemies.

I think it is better to have good and honest people than to have bad ones, but, unfortunately, there are too many bad people around.

@Mike197602 Right now as poor as I am, cannot say I would not. If I knew I was in a sustainable way, I would give it back. Funny how that works.

I know if I were in Howard's shoes, I would wrestle mu conscience to either give it back to the former owners or keep it.

A lot of people are God fearing that even though the money was legally his, he was thinking that the former owners of the money needed it more than he did.

Even as bad as I need money right now I still would of had to return it to.
