Finding money in the street.

Last night my partner rang me and told me he had found £20 lying on the path. He is a very honest person and thought he should take it to the police. Now if it had been a wallet with a name in it he definitely should but I think a note which someone has dropped is probably never going to get back to its owner so he might as well keep it. £20 is approximately $26 so I'm sure someone would have missed it but is it enough to hand it in to the police? What would you do?

The police are not going to find the owner. He should just keep the money.

That's what I told him. I said if his conscience was bothering him he should give it to me

As you say, if it was a wallet with a name, it would make sense to bring to the police, in this case I would keep... or the policeman would.

@LadyDuck I persuaded Pete to keep it. The owner will never be found and I'm sure the police would tell him to keep it.

Some people are not honest though.I know someone who found a wallet, took the money out and threw the wallet away. Disgusting. They don't know that I know that but a mutual friend told me and I was really surprised.

@sprite1950 This is something I would never do, if I know to whom bring back the money I do. But if I found $20 in the street, I see no reason to bring the money to the police.

I would definitely have done the same - kept it. Without some form of ID, you'd never establish who the owner is. I'd only give it in if it were a wallet or purse.

@Lushlala Did you lose the money that you left or was it still there? I think I would cry if I did that

@sprite1950 Yes, he'll have been really peed off. I once picked up a crisp, new £20. It was so strange because the street was deserted, almost like someone was testing me. I was skint and thought, sod it, I'm taking it This other time I withdrew £50 and forgot to take it before walking away. It was only when I was at the store that I realised I musn't have taken it. Nobody stopped me to say I'd forgotten my money.

If it is only money, no wallet or identification then I would keep it otherwise I would give it to the police or contact the person.

@sprite1950 what the police can do if there is no identification?

I am with you. If it's just a note, no one would be able to rightly claim it, so I would just keep it. If I could absolutely identify who it belonged to that would be a different story.

I think it would be impossible to find its rightful owner. If you hand something in to the police, they are supposed to keep it for a certain amount of time to give the owner a chance to claim it. I doubt many people, if any, would go to the police about a dropped £20 note. If the item is still with the police after a certain amount of time (I can't remember how long) then the item should be returned to the person who handed it in (as long as the item is not illegal or being used for evidence or anything). It has been said, however, that the police would keep the cash themselves rather than handing it back. What I'm saying, in a roundabout way, is that the money would, assuming the police were honest, most likely come back to your husband anyway. If there was another person around or if there was something else with the money, there may have been a way to get it back. Otherwise, I would keep it. Perhaps your husband could put it to good use, donate it to charity or pay it forward somehow. I think any larger amount, I would use social media to let people know I'd found it and get it back to whoever had lost it.

@sprite1950 Yeah, I wouldn't just say 'I've found this cash, anyone want to claim it?' If it was a large amount, I might just say I'd found an amount of cash and ask that anyone claiming it told me the exact amount and any detail they could about it. I'd rather do that than leave it at a police station for the precise reason that you've said!

@pumpkinjam I think he just kept it in the end. I must admit that's probably what I would have done.

The problem with putting it on social media is there would be no proof of who it belonged to and everyone would be claiming it . I told him to keep it as the next person would. It wouldn't surprise me if the police kept it and pretended it had been claimed. Not everyone is honest including members of the police force.

I think most of us would. I saw a man drop some money once but I chased him with it. It's different if you know who the owner is.

I do not think you need to report this to the police. As they are not going to hand it over to the owner anyways. I have never had a chance or luck to find money like this. But my husband has found many times. Rather than giving it to the cops, my husband feeds the homeless kids from half the money and rest half we keep. We also need money, anything extra is a blessing for us. But we make sure we share it with someone more needy too.

I would have kept it Doubt the police will investigate and it’s hard to find the owner as no name is attached unless there is security footage but even so may be hard or takes too long / effort to return $20 something bucks. But your partner is very honest

How could the cops find the owner of money found on the street with no identification. Perhaps you can just think that it came from heaven. That's it, it is all yours to keep and to spend.

@sprite1950 I understand the stand of your partner towards owning which is not his. But if there is no way to identify the owner then maybe you can just give it to the cops for his peace of mind.

@sprite1950 I have found money on the ground before, but, lately have not. I would look around to see if anyone might have lost it. If no one was around I would take it home. There is no one I could turn it in to.

If it makes him happy to hand it in then he should do that. The money could have been lost by an elderly person or somebody living on a low budget.

Maybe but it was late at night (gone midnight) so I don't think an old person would be out that late. The police would just tell him to keep it I think.

@sprite1950 That is true, most older people are not out late at night. It was more likely to have been dropped by somebody on a night out. Perhaps they had too much to drink and did not know they had lost it.

@lazydaizee It was not far from a Tesco Express shop so they might have been buying petrol or food and dropped it.
