My MetroCard is about to expire and it still has a balance on it

I have a balance on my MetroCard but the card expires on the 30th. Before, I used to put the card into the MetroCard vending machine to add money to it and it would not allow me to do it as it is soon to expire; but then it would give me a new card and transfer my balance on it. And it cost me nothing.
I am gonna try doing that today. I wonder if it will work this time around. The machine usually charges $1 if you are getting a new MetroCard and putting money on it. While it's a not that big a deal I'd rather not have to pay it. Plus, I want to make sure the money on my current MetroCard doesn't vanish when the card expires.

Is that for NY transit (subway and bus) use?

My balance was transferred to a new card and I did not have to pay the $1 fee.

@porwest I am glad I have a new card now because the old one gave me a read error on the bus a few times. Thankfully, the bus driver was nice enough to let me go through and didn't kick me off the bus.

I was able to transfer the money to a new card and I wasn't charged anything for that.

It worked! And as far as I can tell I wasn't charged a $1.

When I selected to refill my card it asked me if I want to transfer the balance to a new card so that is what I did. Didn't charge me for it.

I put in my card to refill it and the machine told me it expires in 7 days and asked me if I want to transfer the money to a new card. I selected yes. First it gave me my old card back and then it gave me a new card with my balance on it. No charge for that.

I am not sure. I transferred the money from my old card to a new one and the new one expires sometime in 2021. Don't remember the exact month.
