Our B&B helps support the orphanage next door

We have been so impressed with the orphanage here. Hugo and his wife, Anita, both Nepalese, now help run the B&B and the orphanage. Hugo’s mother and father started the orphanage together with a woman from Germany. The father has now passed on. The children all seem really happy. The younger ones sleep in dormitories of ten beds while the adolescents have four to a room. The ages range from 5 to 19. They stay there until they have finished their education or until they have a job. When they get a job, they still stay at the orphanage until they have had the chance to save a little money. They might move in with friends but only once the place has been deemed as suitable. All learn to be independent. Older ones wash their own clothes, dishes, etc and help teach the little ones these skills. They also learn to cook. There is nowhere close to get a meal but we can get dinner here. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal here tonight. Breakfast is included in the tariff. The photo shows the view from the front door.

What an entrancing view. I would love to be able to look out each day at this. The orphanage sounds wonderful. I think they are doing such a great things for these children.

They are. I wish we were able to do something to help them but they seem to be managing very well.

They seem to be doing such great work but no-one at the wedding had ever heard of them.

That is awesome. So glad there are still kind-hearted people in this world!! It seems like they would accept donations?

@JudyEv They need to find a solution to that problem. Mailing is no good?

@kareng You can mail it but there is always the chance that someone will open the mail. I know a friend sent money to Nepal in a greeting card and it got there but virtually nothing makes it to Egypt.

I'm sure they would but the problem is getting money to them. The fees that are charged are outrageous. We found that with the little boy we were helping. Luckily we were able to bring the money with us this time.

@JudyEv that would be too isolated for me

@arthurchappell And too isolated for many. You'd either need to be prepared to pay for a taxi down into the town or like walking.

The location is fantastic. Unfortunately, unless you're really keen on walking and used to steep hills, it isn't very convenient to anywhere.

That is great. Here at 18 they are on their own unless they are in a caring foster home.

They won't let them leave until they are quite certain they can manage.

What a beautiful view! Shouldn't it all be covered in snow at this time of year? And another question...why are there so many children in the orphanage for such a small village? What happened to all their parents?

@JudyEv when I think of Nepal, I think of Mt Everest, with a few snow-covered villages scattered in the mountain sides. It sounds like there is much more to the country than that.

@moffittjc Well, it's very hilly but so far Kathmandu and its suburbs all seem to blend in pretty much. We went to Bhaktapur which seems to be a separate city but there is no 'open space' between it and Kathmandu. I think the bus trip on Sunday will take us through a lot of country that isn't developed in any way.

They get snow occasionally apparently. I guess the orphange caters for a large area. We're about half-an-hours drive from Kathmandu but the houses and shops didn't stop all the way. The areas all seem to blend into each other.

How does the B&B support the orphanage though I'm confused. Does part of the money the B&B earns go to the orphanage?

Both are run by the same group of people and the profits from the B&B go towards the upkeep of the orphanage. I didn't explain it very well.

@JudyEv I've always had hills in sight of where I've lived, usually right beside me and I just couldn't settle when I lived on the flat north coast for a few years. I think it was to do with hills.

@xFiacre I'm sure you do get used to an environment. Some people need to be close to the sea. I need to be close to the bush or at least to farmland.
