A Hole in the Ice

We have been waiting on pins and needles for the results of our Ice Princess’s figure skating results. Her skate was this morning in the Lake Placid Empire State Winter Olympics. Her other grammy has been texting me back and forth and told me that there was a hole or depression in an area of the ice skating rink, where all the skaters fell. Not good! Sure enough, she sent our granddaughter’s video, and sure enough, our granddaughter fell during a double axel. She got up and continued her skating as if she never fell. My husband said that she’s done and left the house. I just got word that our little Ice Princess took third place!!! She needed to be in the top five. And her skating was absolutely beautiful despite the fall. My husband just received the good news.

What does she need to be in the top five for? What is the next step she wants to reach?

It will help her to get to the Juvenile level in the US Women’s Figure Skating, and offer opportunities to represent the state of New York all over the country.

I am so glad that she took the third place, despite the fall, but I understand that everyone had the same problem. What a shame they did not repair the ice.

@LadyDuck I found out that it takes a long time to repair the ice. Still, they should have warned the skaters or put up orange warning cones,

Thanks, Anna. I was surprised they didn’t repair it either or tell the skaters to avoid that area of the ice. It’s a good thing no one broke any bones!

Oh my gah she is on double axel already (oh these young ones learn so fast - I'm jealous!)! Well that is fantastic - I know that's a difficult one especially when doing it "out there" - she attempted it and even though she fell, she got right back up - very important to keep moving on. Congratulations that she placed !

@DianneN I know those double axel falls can be hard (well not from personal experience but I've seen kids fall in practice from trying double axels all the time . . . they end up to be side/hip falls - serious ouch!). In competition, at least there is the adrenolyn to help keep you going. What was that deodorant commercial "Never let them see you sweat" . . . that's literally what you gotta do especially in front of judges and an audience .

@much2say She has fallen millions of times learning new skills. I remember when she tried the axel. It’s true about never let them see you sweat. Her coaches from her first competition have always stressed to get up and keep going. That darn hole should never have been there, and it still irks me.

She’s full of surprises for sure! Thanks so much! She at least learned to get up and keep going after a fall. In the video, she didn’t bat an eye.

What a shame that a hole in the ice could be detrimental to the skaters. Glad your Ice Princess took third place in spite of her fall.

I don’t know why the hole wasn’t repaired in that rink or why none of the skaters were warned to stay away from that area. I’m just thankful no one was hurt. Thanks! Her skate was wonderful despite that fall.

I can't believe they allowed a hole to remain in the ice, that was dangerous! Thank God, she wasn't injured and Congratulations on her very honorable, 3rd place rating She's definitely a CHAMPION

It takes a lot of time to repair those holes, but I am surprised they didn’t warn the skaters or put cones around that area. We are thankful she wasn’t injured and thanks so much! She was thrilled with her victory and so are we. I was a nervous nelly and didn’t leave the house until I heard how her skate went.

Thanks! We are thrilled for her. All I know is that they use machines to smooth the ice. I think they should have roped off that section, put up orange cones, and warned all the skaters to avoid that area.

@DianneN Yes they should have noted that. Was it anyone’s advantage like was this home base for an opponent or rival? Or was it fair game that the kids all didn’t know??

@infatuatedbby None of the kids knew in her group. I don’t know if word got out, because after the event, they left to go to another area for the results and award ceremony.

@rebelann I’m sure no one can sue them due to contracts, etc. It must be “ skate at your own risk” or something like that.

@simone10 We are thinking about it for sure. Because of her skating, she performed Off Broadway, was asked to perform in The Ice Theater of New York (too late in the evening and past her bedtime), and represented the state of New York in Michigan. My son hopes she wins a scholarship to college.. Time will tell......

@DianneN Do you have any fingernails left, or did you bite them all off? I would think they would warn them or at least fix the ice before they allowed the skaters to skate. They could have had serious injuries.

@just4him LOL! I’m not a nail biter, but I get tremendous knots in my stomach. I also woke up with a stress headache which disappeared immediately after I received the good news. It wasn’t done at all. Also, to repair the ice would take a long time. They had a schedule to stick to and many, many skaters. I’m just glad I didn’t hear of any injuries.
