Do you ever spend too much money on clothes?

Fairly recently, I noticed that the right rear pocket was wearing out on my faviorite pair of shorts. They (the shorts) were perfect for working with my young friends at my friend's preschool, and also good for Saturday and Sunday cycles and hikes. But I decided it was time for a new pair of shorts. I went to Target and bought these shorts for literally $16.99 (on sale). They have become my "go to" shorts when its going to be 55 F or over, and especially I'm going to work with the littlies. Have you ever spent large sums of money for clothing, just so you could be "work-appropriate"?

I am also frugal with clothes that even the worn out that I still wear. In fact, I have many new shirts and shorts that are not used yet - they are holiday gifts that I received.

@TheHorse maybe in summer or when some of my clothes get torn. No joke, I have more than 10 shirts and shorts here all brand new.

When I was young I used to love to buy trendy clothes. Now I dress for comfort. I don't spend a lot on clothes, especially now that I'm retired.

I think one can look "good" without being too "trendy." Some things, like jeans and button down shirts, are timeless.

@TheHorse Exactly. When I was young, in the 60s, I could wear all the "Carnaby Street"-type fashions and enjoyed those types of clothes....Now I wear classics, as you do.

What do you tend to wear? For college teaching, I wear long pants and a nice button-down shirt. With the littlies, it's a random walk.

No. Never did. And now that I’m retired jeans are “work appropriate.”

@TheHorse — yes, but I don’t wear “jammies,” per se. I sleep in shorts and t-shirts.

Exactly. Excessive clothes are also hard to maintain. We should have just enough.Neither more, nor less.

Needed. That's my basic philosophy. But if I lose my genius (incredible competence), I might have to start "dressing the part." That time has not come yet.

My aunt comments and she is kinda ...what have you worn ..type of person. Old school. So yeah, I do think she is my well wisher, and I have spent some on clothes. But at any point of time, you won't find more than 25 sets all inclusive (nighties outing wear home wear etc) in my wardrobe. I like mix and match system. I have some clothes that are 25 years old. I came here because I wanted to fight with somebody. You are my favorite victim. You joined myLot after me, and have 1947 posts here. I have in all just 999 posts! And I cannot figure out how to reach the 1000s. I don't like discussing recipes and soiled clothes and I haven't eight legged boyfriends.

I think my yearly clothing total is around $150 or so. I shop at a nice thrift store that sells nice higher end clothing to help with the mission and occasionally buy something from Target or Kohls. The highest I pay for something is a maxi dress or skirt and even then usually around $50.

Not really. I always bought what was comfortable to wear. Our work wardrobe was business casual and we all wore jeans or slacks until we had a big meeting or had to deal with the public. It was nice. Now there were several ladies that played the wardrobe game. They tried to out-dress each other every day. Not for me and who wants to wear a dress and heels every day of the week?

I have a nice jacket (suit jacket with no matching pants) that I haven't worn in years. In my dad's day, professors actually wore suits when they taught!

I used to spend a lot on clothes when I was younger in my twenties till forties, it was different working for a private company in a highly urbanized city than now that I am working with the government in a simple community.
