Vince in his element

While we were in the Temple Square in Lumbini, Nepal, a group of school-girls spotted us and came running over. They were so excited as though we were Hollywood celebrities. They had good English and told us they were law students from a neighbouring town. They shook our hands and chatted then lined up to one side and, one by one, they stood between us, held our hands and had their photo taken. We managed to talk them into a group photo for ourselves. A couple were a bit shy and stood back a bit but eventually came forward and were photographed. We experienced the same situation a few times. I don’t know why we caused such excitement. I can only suppose it was because of our pale skin. They must see thousands of tourists. I wonder if they all get the same friendly treatment. I do try to smile at students and children – and others. The Nepali people are very friendly and have a great sense of humour. One interesting point – I thought they were saying they were ‘low’ students and they had to spell it out ‘L A W’ before we caught on. Just a slight difference in intonation/accent but we were unable to work out what they were saying Doesn’t Vince look like the cat that caught the mice? See you back in Australia.

It is quite bizarre when people ask you to have your photo taken with them. We often find we are asked when we are in Asia to pose with a family or groups of people! (Probably to use the photo for darts practice!)

It's very bizarre as you say. Once, I was sitting on a wall and a girl sidled up next to me - didn't say anything - and her friend took a photo! Then they went off giggling. I checked but I didn't have two heads.

@rebelann I guess it strokes his ego - and makes up for the times he gets mistaken for my father. To be honest, it's only happened once or twice.

They spelt out what they were trying to say and they were 'law' students. We just couldn't work out the accent.

I agree, that is a nice photo of Vince. Over here, there are also people who pronounce law as low. But they are not law students and more likely a law student here wouldn't make that mistake in the pronunciation.

It's not so much a 'mistake' as just a slight difference - but it was enough to throw us.

Yes, Vince seems to enjoy the out of the blue occasion and took it like a duck takes to water! Regarding accent I cannot but recall my time at a theme park in the Gold Coast. I was called to partake in a short skit in front of hundreds. I was given rapid fire instructions to make it lively. I could not follow some of the lines but the audience seemed to enjoy it. Yes, they were more than kind - siva

It doesn't take much to throw a person if the accent is a bit different. They seem to say NEpal and LUMbini whereas we're more inclined to say nePAL and lumBIni. So if they more the stress with other words, we used to be battling.
