Graffiti or street art?

We saw very little graffiti in Nepal while we were visiting. Rubbish and litter was another matter.
Of course, graffiti has gained a new respectability with being renamed ‘street art’. I wonder if there is a distinction between them. I guess maybe there is.
The boy in the bottom left corner was quite near our hotel in Kathmandu while the other three were all on the one wall down a laneway in Pokhara. I particularly like the little boy. Some of these artists are so talented.
It’s going to be a hot day here. I’ve washed half the clothing that we wore in Nepal and they’ll all be put away ready for our own cold weather when it comes.

We have the so called street artists that paint the big walls of usually government offices and public schools. That is much better than the rascals who spray paint the walls with nonsense graffiti.

@JudyEv maybe the difference are the painters? Murals here are done by artists. So I don't know what a street art is.

@Alexandoy Maybe they all blur into one. I guess the town murals are more like scenes rather than a single item or whatever. This one was in Tasmania.

@JudyEv Those would be some great books to look through. I am completely awed by how great some of the street art is.

@moffittjc It's our eldest's birthday soon and we picked up a copy of Banksy's Wall and Piece. I'd forgotten we had it. I think we picked it up at a rubbish tip in a room where they sell anything saleable. I hope he doesn't already have a copy. We also brought him back a scarf from Nepal.

I suppose it's all in the eye of the beholder.
I really don't understand why this kind of thing tolerated. I guess I just don't get why everyone has to be forced to see this kind of art. The same goes for overly loud music, why do I have to listen to music I don't like just because someone has his stereo blaring.
Talent is also in the eye of the beholder, I'll never get Picasso, I don't like that kind of art.

@judyev I'm not so keen on street art - it may be cleverly done but I prefer my public spaces to be left neutral and I find it presumptuous that practitioners assume everyone wants to see their work. It's akin to politicians sticking up posters of their ugly mugs on lampposts at election time. However it is definitely not graffiti since the word graffiti come from the Greek grapho, I write.

I take your point but some massive brick walls can be pretty 'dominating' if left as they are.

Graffiti is unauthorized defacing of property. Street art is trying to beautify your environment by painting a picture with the approval of the city council. The upper photo to the left looks like the kind of graffiti I see in the U.S.

I think that graffiti has come a long way from what it once was. Those people doing a lot of it have some amazing talent and then there are some that are pretty bad I have to admit!

In Australia, I think they virtually gave up trying to stamp it out.

That would be considered street art.
