Medications are cheap in Nepal

We caught colds while we were in Nepal. Vince got one first then gave it to me. At least, that’s my story. We had taken quite a lot of antihistamine and paracetamol with us but the former was getting down as our noses were running like taps. Vince remembered from previous trips that medications in Nepal were incredibly cheap. We stocked up on both antihistamine and paracetamol then Vince bought a few sleeping pills as well. We bought 75 of the former and about 25 paracetamol for about $A3. When we bordered the plane at midnight we each took half a sleeping pill. It was a five hour flight but when we disembarked at Kuala Lumpur, I was quite wobbly. If I bent over, I thought my head was going to come off. I rarely take sleeping pills but at least I did sleep on the plane. The photo is of a local bus. Maybe others are used to seeing these three wheelers but I’m not. I was forever worrying that they were going to tip on their sides.

@JudyEv Oh good. Happy you feel better - I've heard the same about Mexican medicines.

They would cram at least a dozen people into this van.

It is good that the Medications are cheap in Nepal, so the local people can afford it more. Here the common medications are OK but as to the serious disease like cancer treatment, surgery etc. are not cheap at all. Some can be rather expensive and it is always sad to see that people can't afford it and suffer to die at last.

@JudyEv I understand. So it is lucky for the people who have a government to provide them good health care.

That happens in Australia too. Some procedures are really expensive and people nearly go bankrupt trying to afford them.

Meds are also cheap in Canada. We stock up on aspirin with Codeine when there, but never use it. I’m fortunate to fall asleep easily on flights. I never took a sleeping pill in my life. All I need is a pillow and I’m out! Those buses look very unstable to me.

@JudyEv My husband dozes before take off, and remains awake until landing, no matter how long of a flight.

@DianneN Vince mostly sleeps right through. I've discovered watching a movie helps get rid of a couple of hours.

I rarely take a sleeping pill but I don't sleep as easily as I once did. It's good you sleep easily on flights. It helps pass the time.

I don't like taking sleeping pills but I'd had an awful 5 hours from KL to Kathmandu so I thought a pill might help. It was a very funny sensation. I nearly went head first in the toilet!

Probably the reason why medicine is cheap is because it's near India which is one of the producers of the cheapest medicines in the world. I had never tried taking sleeping pills, I would probably be afraid I won't wake up. We have lots of three wheelers in the Philippines but perhaps not that size.

Yes, the medications we got were from India. I'm glad I didn't have a whole pill or I might not have woken up.

I don't take any kind of sleeping aid as I probably would feel all sorts of woozy if I did. That bus does look like it could tip over.

We can get most things easily enough. Some, of course, you need a prescription for but that seems to be pretty lax in Nepal too.

@JudyEv That is no fun. What does $A3 mean? I take it the half a pill got to you. To me that looks more like a truck than a bus.

$A3 means 3 Australian dollars. Yes, we had half a pill each. They used to use these vehicles as buses and cram them full of people.

@JudyEv I know about how buses cram people on them. When I used to take the bus that is what the bus driver did and it was horrible. Thanks for explaining what they meant.
