Fond memories.

When I was a kid in Chicago, my parents would ship my brother and me off to summer camp in Michigan for eight weeks. Some of my fondest memories of childhood come from that place. In Winter, the camp would host a "retreat," and we'd visit our beloved horses, eat in the "mess hall," ride snowmobiles, and in general have a good time. This photo is not of me. It is of my buddy Jimmy, hugging a horse I don't recognize. He was (is) a couple of years younger than me and always looked up to me as an "older brother" type figure. My real brother (one year younger than me) didn't care much for me in those days, so it was good to have someone to teach baseball, football, horseback riding, etc. to. He and I recently reestablished contact on Facebook, but we haven't "caught up" yet. This picture must be from 1975 or so. Do you have pictures of yourself from happy childhood days? I'll attach some (if I can find them) to any comments I get. I'll also attach one of me with my beloved horse out here in California. She passed away a couple of years ago, at age 35.

That's a great picture of your friend. I'll need to see if I can find any pictures from 'happy' childhood days.

@just4him I didn't want to give in to sadness.

@just4him I can relate to sad situations. I think that's a part of why I chose to abandon the academic rat race and work with troubled kids.

I had a pretty crappy childhood @TheHorse ; so no. Any pictures I have are reminders of something bad. I wish I could have done what you did.

@TheHorse After 17 1/2 years of a brutal marriage, I now have to deal with physical disabilities, so I figure my happy day is when I croak.

@TheHorse I agree...you were very cute without your shirt on with a shy smile. And when you were pulling your shirt down some more so that nobody could see you had wet your shorts... I promise Pony from 2021 I will stop teasing you... if my case clears.

Oh, I was a cute kid but didn't realize it at the time. I don't know what happened.

@vandana7 I was potty trained pretty early. The smile in that early photo was not shy, as my dad took the picture.

I have very few photos but tons of memories. Love this photo. You look happy. My older brother and I did everything together. And we lost our Mom early as well. I was only 14. A dark shadow forever. But we went on and tried to live happy lives. Amazing that horses live such long lives.

Aw... that is sad..I lost mine at five and a half. Sometimes when dishes don't turn out well, I cuss her. I know I shouldn't. But I get mad at her for not being around to teach me.

@CarolDM They say as adults we don't miss them. But we do. And I truly do not understand folks who throw their parents out...abuse them, physically and mentally. Out here such things are trending.

So sad about your horse. Do you ever think of getting another one? Camp sounds like it was a blast. Most of the pictures I have are from high school and beyond. That's a great picture of Jimmy. I'm glad you were able to reconnect with him.
