For the heck of it, I looked up the name of our son’s building in Manhattan, and it popped up immediately. I learned quite a few facts, some of which I didn’t know.
It was designed by Gaentano Ajello and built in 1915.
It is made of white brick with a limestone base with masonry details.
It has a green canopied step-up lobby with a full time attended lobby, a full time doorman, a live-in super, elevators to each co-op’s separate lobby, a bike room and storage rooms.
There are 75 co-ops from 3 to 9 rooms.
Each has elegant entry foyers, decorative fireplaces, soaring high ceilings, crown moldings, and parquet floors.
There is a courtyard for grilling with tables an chairs.
There is a rooftop green space with picnic tables.
It allows dogs and cats and children.
It’s close to Central Park, the Hudson River, Riverside Park, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, theaters, restaurants, public and private schools, libraries, bookstores, public transportation including the subway, ice skating rinks, places of worship, community centers, and a host of grocery stores, markets, arts, etc.
The average price per square foot is $2000.00.
If our son sells his co-op, he would make a killing. But he’s not selling. They love it there.

Yes, that’s where they live.
The view from the rooftop shows Midtown and the Hudson River.

That price is probably less than the square footage in newer buildings.
Many rooftops have swimming pools and lush gardens.
We celebrated our granddaughter’s birthday party up on the rooftop one year. What a view of Midtown and the Hudson River!
Omg! No way does he own the building!
He bought a co-op a few years ago, gutted it and redid it. He has three bedrooms, a kitchen/dining room, a computer room, large living room, two bathrooms, laundry room, floor to ceiling closets, and walk in closets. He made good use of every nook and cranny.

Thanks! We tried to get them to move to Connecticut and buy a house, but they love all the city has to offer.

He calls our house and his in-laws‘ Connecticut house his country homes.
No other residence for him until the kids are done with figure skating, ice hockey, tennis, religious school, sleep away camps, and college.

@LindaOHio They looked in Westchester, in New York, and found a huge beautiful house with a huge amount of land.
They interviewed a figure skating coach there, but my granddaughter didn’t like him, so they decided to stay in Manhattan.
Now, they travel to New Jersey every day over the George Washington Bridge for her lessons and practices.

Yes, that’s their home.
It’s a pre war building which is truly beautiful compared to the new, modern building.
It is gorgeous inside. He had it gutted when he bought it and had the parquet floors saved. He worked with an architect for 1 1/2 years to make it the way they wanted it to look.

Well, thanks,
.
They have to live somewhere in Manhattan, and close enough to the kids’ schools.
It’s a wonderful investment, but if my son sold it, it would cost him a fortune to buy anything else in NYC.
A studio apartment can cost around one million.

The architects were designing some wonderful interiors back then. We also have some old buildings in Greece that are renovated and they are so classy with high ceilings and big spaces. Your son did a great choice to live in such a nice building, these places are hard to find available.

@DianneN It sounds like he knew what he wanted and worked hard for it. Renovations are very costly also, in my old office we had some renovation projects and I am familiar with the amount of time and money they need. Even if you do the best planning, extra costs will come up and there will be delays.

The new buildings can’t compare to the old buildings. The gifted masons are no longer available or few and far between.
I remember the gorgeous old buildings and architecture in Greece. Fabulous!
My son searched all over for a long time for something in the neighborhood where he had a co-op they outgrew. It was in horrible shape when he bought it, but worked with an architect for 1 1/2 years until they got it move in ready.
It was a difficult time for him, because he was paying two mortgages all that time.

Sounds like your son has a great place! I should look for that building next time I'm in Manhattan. Is it more in the Midtown area, or like somewhere on the Upper East or West Side?

My son can work from anywhere if he wants.
It’s the kids’ tennis, figure skating, ice hockey, religious school, sleepovers, birthday parties, etc. that keep them so darn busy.
We have to book dates just to see them.

Nope!

Sounds super nice and they are centralized to everything! Didn't your husband want to get a place in Manhattan as well? Now I can see why! But I'm sure they cost a pretty penny
