How big do you want your TV screen to be?

I can remember the time when a TV was a modest little box that sat in the corner of the room and behaved itself. The screen size was limited by the fact that the picture was projected via a cathode ray tube and displayed as a series of constantly repeated lines - first it was 405 lines then things got better with 625 lines. When digital display came along, the screen could get bigger - and bigger - and bigger! The largest screens available today can be 100 inches across - that's 8 feet or 2.5 metres! You can go to a multiplex cinema and watch a film on a smaller screen than that! But do you really want a monster like that in your living room? I can see how it might be appropriate in a pub or club, where they want to show football matches to a roomful of people, but in your home? My two silly questions would be - 1. Where do you put the Christmas tree so that you can also watch the TV? 2. Where do the bookshelves go? Of course, that second question is really silly - it's only old fuddy-duddy retired librarians like me who worry about bookshelves!

I think my TV is 32 inches. I usually watch things on my iPad, so my usual viewing size is about 13 inches. If you have a huge Telly, you can put a screen saver of bookcases and Christmas trees on it and not worry about anything else in the living room!

Nice thought - but I actually like to read the books!

Don't you prefer watching on a larger screen? The tornado footage is more dramatic on a big screen. A home run bashed off Homer Bailey more epic. Blue eyes ever bigger.

@JohnRoberts — oh, I know. The box sets for Department S and The Champions are sitting on the (region-free) DVD player.

There is no way I'd want a TV that size. And I'd be placing the bookshelves first then worrying about other stuff.

@indexer Book shelves must always take priority. I visit an elderly lady who has a gigantic telly which she never turns off and has it at full volume. As soon as I walk in the door I feel like I’m actually one of the chapters in whatever programme she’s watching - usually Coronation Street.

I think our tv is around 50 inches. It fits nicely in our entertainment center so there's plenty of room on the side shelves for books, etc. As for the Christmas tree....It goes in front of the main window. I made sure there was a place for both when I was buying this house

I suppose that's OK if the room is big enough to start with, but most living rooms in the UK are not!

I would like a supersized TV screen. I have other rooms for bookshelves.

Surely it depends on the size of your room. As long as you have the space For it and a room big enough so you are far enough away.I bc think you’re supposed to sit twice the diagonal length of the tv away.

I don't have a tv. I watch everything on my computer which has a 22 inch screen and it suits me fine.

@indexer Yes, that would be a problem. Thankfully here the speed is fine and I have one less device in the house.

That wouldn't work for me - the broadband speed round here isn't fast enough.

We love books, but we only watch TV in the evening for no more than 1 hour. We do not care for a big screen, I want something discrete that does not take all the room and I can close inside the cabinet if I like. I prefer to read books.
