Do you play the ukulele?

Our news service sometimes puts up a ‘human interest’ segment. Heaven knows it’s welcome, particularly now, after all the coronavirus special reports that we’ve been getting. Last night’s segment focussed on the continuing and increasing popularity of the ukulele. The ukulele is highly portable and equally suited to being a solo or group instrument. One of those interviewed described it as a ‘happy’ instrument. In some WA (West Australian) schools, the ukulele is ousting the plastic recorder as a means of involving children with music. The instrument is synonymous with Hawaii, having been introduced there by Portuguese immigrants in the 19th century. Hawaiian musician, Israel Kamakawiwo?ole’s, rendition of ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’ in the 1990s helped popularise the instrument. In Albany, on WA’s south coast, the ukulele is being taught in schools and 250 are sold in an average month. One luthier (instrument maker) in Albany is building custom ukuleles using high-quality Australian timbers. Once seen as perhaps a poor cousin to most other instruments, it now appears in the hands of many a very accomplished artist and small groups are appearing in many towns. We even have one in Donnybrook. The photo is from a concert at the Music Shack. The lady on the left is playing a ukulele.

My cousin left the US to go to college in Australia to learn how to play a ukulele. I know, crazy right!

We have a ukelele because my friend gave one to my daughter for her 2nd birthday (strange gift to an only 2 year old, right?). So we have a chord chart and book too. My husband's sort of the guitar player, so he has tried to learn it. It does seem pretty popular now!

My eldest brother had a ukulele, he was taught by my grandfather. Later he was bought a guitar. I only learned guitar and it is a shame that I did not learn to play ukulele.

You could easily learn it now. It would probably be easier for you if you can already play guitar.

The ukulele was a "hot" instrument in the 1920s. Cliff "Ukulele Ike" Edwards was a big star then.

@judyev I don't play myself, but my daughter does if that helps. When she passed her final exams at school she came home with one and announced that it was the congratulations present I had bought her. I am mightily pleased that the ukulele is ousting the recorder in schools - what an annoying instrument the recorder always was.

@JudyEv Have you ever heard them played pleasantly. All spittle and squeak in my experience.

@xFiacre They're not bad in a group and well played. But ukuleles are better.

I like that - the congratulations present. Recorders are awful screechy things, aren't they? Although played nicely, they are quite pleasant.

As a music educator, I play both. I teach recorder in elementary school. However, with the pandemic and worrying about germs, I'm wondering if we should order a bunch of ukuleles. I wouldn't be able to teach note-reading in the same way, though.

I don't know how hard they are to tune and how much time you'd have to spend doing that.

@petatonicsca Many use a tuning machine nowadays. Is that what you do? I guess it gets more accurate results.

@JudyEv I usually tune 12 guitars when I'm teaching fifth graders at school. Once they have been in use for a week, they tend to stay in tune. Mind you, the ukuleles I have had have not stayed in tune as well as the guitars. But they are not hard to tune, maybe 30 seconds per instrument (but then I'm experienced).

I've kept a copy of the URL in case I buy one for myself one day. I think my trouble would be learning stuff by heart rather than having to rely on the music all the time. I watched some of the lesson. It's very clear.

@JudyEv Yes, he is very clear. I chose his course for my at-home students because his teaching style is similar to the way I usually teach guitar, which is what they would have had at school.

I asked for a guitar for my Birthday one year. Mom checked prices and ended up buying me a ukulele instead. I was disappointed, but ended up learning how to play it! Do I own one now? No, I don't.

I do like the instrument, but I do not play it. I probably could since I play the guitar, even though the tuning is different.

@porwest I would have thought some of the chords would have been much the same but with two strings missing.

@JudyEv I think it does. The chord forms are different too, so you have to wrap your head around what a C looks like on it as opposed to a C on a guitar and get your mind to remember where your fingers are supposed to go. I think I would have some trouble with that since I pretty much have memorized all of the chord forms on the guitar, and you don't even think about when you see the chord—you see a Dm7 chord and your fingers just go to that shape automatically.
