Our friend has car-owner-virus (say it quickly)

Our friend in Hobart, Tasmania, has ‘carownervirus’. Some people can’t help collecting cars. From time to time, we see backyards or paddocks on farms crammed with cars of all descriptions. You have to wonder how many ever get restored to anything like their former glory. Our friend must have 30 or 40 tucked under trees here and there all over his five acres. Now he is building a big shed to hold them all – or at least some of them. He’d need a warehouse to hold them all. He and Vince once planned to import a container load of MGBs from America and convert them to right-hand-drive before selling them. It’s probably a good thing that the idea didn’t get off the ground.

A friend of mine threatened to divorce her husband because he kept bringing home old fixemuppers until her back yard was full of cars. The house she was renting sat on 5,500 square feet of land so that didn't leave much space for a back yard. Does your friend plan to turn them into planters?

I forgot to say the photo was at a tiny town in WA. He will fix at least some of them but of course each one takes time and money - and meanwhile more bargains keep turning up!

You need a good budget to be infected by this passionate virus. And definitely a big space too.

@arunima25 I guess over time he hopes to do them all up and slowly sell them.

@JudyEv He really needs a big space. But what will he do with so many cars?? Does he have a future plan or business idea??

I agree. It's a good thing it didn't take off as planned or you might have cars all over your property.

That is a very expensive virus. Maybe he can build a museum for all his cars.

@thelme55 I think he will do them up one at a time and maybe sell them. He needs a shed so he can work on them easily.

Yes, he can't resist a cheap car although the ones he has are expensive models but he buys them cheaply.

I forgot to say this car was at a tiny town in WA and didn't belong to our friend. Vince likes playing around with his photos and some look really good in black and white.

Luckily we're not into buying old cars. I think they look really messy cluttering up a yard. Or a paddock!

My uncle used to. But that was a cheap supply of parts for him as he repaired for people.

The scrap yards here charge a small fortune for spare parts off wrecks. It's quite a lucrative business.

We call them rednecks here. So unsightly. My brother’s first car was an MG. Too bad he got rid of it.

I suppose we all need a hobby, but cars sounds expensive and you need a lot of room! I'll stick with board games

Do you collect them? Our son in Ireland has a heap and plays quite regularly with his friends. Now, he has joined a chess club and they go round the country playing in tournaments although that may all stop for a while now.

@JudyEv I have a fair collection of board games, which is split between the front and bedrooms. I really should have a count and see how many I have.

I know a guy like that too. Well he tries to be like that but he doesn't have enough land so he only has I think it is 16 cars waiting to be restored. Most of them been sitting at least 15 years now. He does work on them when he has time and motivation. I think in the last 15 years that I have known him he has actually finished I think it been 3 or 4. Of course he has since replaced all of those with others that he is going to get around to.

This is the same story with this guy. He does restored some from time to time. But then a really good 'bargain' will come his way and he buys another.

We have a lot of car waste here. A few meters from my house, there are two brothers who have been working with auto waste for years, I can't even describe what their yard looks like.

Sometimes they make money from selling the parts from wrecks. But such yards always look untidy.

He just collects and let it rot in his lot? I can understand those that collects and restore them and keeps them safe from deteriorating. But for those that only collects and let them rot in their farms I would asky why would they do that?

He does restore one from time to time as he gets time but he still has a great many to go. He is building a shed for them now.
