Are Your Grocery Store Shelves Empty?

With the panic going on with the Corona Virus many are hoarding disinfectants, medicines, food and even toilet paper. It is a bit crazy in my opinion. My husband went to the store yesterday because he was already going to run some errands to pick up a few things like oil for the mower, etc. He was also going to Walmart so I asked if he would pick up a few things that we were out of. He said, "Sure!" Several hours later I got a text from him. He said there was NO parking left at Walmart. He had to park at Burger King on the other side of the end of the parking lot. First of all, I am surprised that he didn't just leave at that point. The parking lot at this store is on a slope and a nice hike to the store from Burger King. When he came home he told me that the people in there were acting like crazy people. I commented that it was probably along the line of hoarding for a hurricane. He said worse! Ladies were in the meat department fighting over whole chickens. He managed to get everything on the list except for his beloved diet cokes. I predict that he will be going back soon because he is addicted to diet cokes. What are the stores looking like in your area? Are the shelves bare? Are people in a panic and hoarding products like bottled water, toilet paper, food, etc.? And are YOU stocked up on essential items? Photo Credit: Pixabay

They looked good when I went in Thursday. But was talking to some people Friday and they were saying the food hoarding was starting.

The madness has started and it is not looking good. Can't get what you need at one store. I'm not running all over. I got another big jar of peanut butter and jelly today. When other food runs out, cooking will commence (sigh) and we will eat peanut butter and jelly and eggs. This is one time I'm glad we have chickens. I'm about to let a rooster loose though. He's starting the egg eating.

@wolfgirl569 This one here is turning into a troublemaker. I think @JohnRoberts must have snuck around here and put a spell on him. The other Roo is a good boy.

@kareng Stores here are shortening their hours. For my grocery shopping I go to Sav-A-Lot then Walmart. Thats it except if I just want something different I stop at the little store out here. My rooster thought he was a big boy yesterday. Until I ran him all over the coop

There seems to be many more cars in the carpark of our supermarket. We have the essentials we need. It's hard to know just how much to stock up.

We are all probably just fine buying our regular items. The television reports are just putting people into panic mode.

@JudyEv The stores need to put a limit on the number of things bought at a time. That would help. I think about the handicapped and elderly that cannot get out and buy things for themselves. They are going to be limited to shopping online or waiting for friend and/or family to offer to shop for them. It's a sad situation going on right now.

Everything looked pretty well stocked but the paper products..Not a square of TP to be had..They need to make a Public Service announcement for people not to hoard TP.

Or the stores limit to two packages each. That would also do the trick.

Our supermarkets like Publix and Winn-Dixie have plenty of food, dairy products, etc., It is the paper goods that most people are 'hoarding'!

It was that way here until Thursday and Friday and it all went downhill. Food is now flying off the shelves.

I honestly have not been to any stores since this whole thing started, but I keep hearing from friends and co-workers that the store shelves are bare. I do need to make a trip to Walmart today to buy something my son needs for a school project, so I will see firsthand what it's really like. I surely hope people here aren't being nasty to each other. As I read on a Facebook meme this morning: Judging by the public's response to the coronavirus, I can see why now the government is withholding the truth about aliens. Yep, if we can't even handle a little virus that most people will never ever get, how are we going to handle the truth about aliens?

I would have just came home if I had to go to Walmart. I will try the pick up next time and then I'll just have to worry about parking. Heck I could park by the door for that short time. People being nasty, rude and plain out mean is just uncalled for.

@kareng After hearing all the horror stories about the people at Walmart, I expected the worst when I went into the store today. What I found was complete calmness, everybody being relaxed and cordial to each other, and everybody helping each other out. It was heartwarming to see.

I have remained home these last 2 weeks but I have placed a few orders for things I need which will be delivered ..... eventually. I haven't run out of anything so if it takes them a little time to get the food to me that's ok.

@rebelann I ordered some weed killer for the ditch at our house in Louisiana yesterday and got a delivery date of April 10th! That is quite a wait but it sure beats going out to the store for it. I am stocked for groceries so no need to go out for at least a week here, probably more.

@kareng This virus is turning people into something maybe they are not or maybe it is showing their true feelings. I was able to find things I wanted at different stores. they are being changed around or things added because of our upcoming holiday.

@kareng Not sure if found all, but, I went to this store that opened not too long ago that is big and found most. There is another store that is not spread out like that that I can find what I want mostly but have to wander around the store and do not want to stay out so long and also do not feel that safe there.

It has been pure madness out there. A madness I have been doing my very best to avoid being part of, so I really have not been in the stores since a lot of this really got going. Although I have been HEARING from many people that it has been trying to find quite a few items. I might venture out a bit on Saturday. I am kind of interested to see what's out there. If I see good, stocked shelves, maybe that becomes a sign of some normalcy returning? Who knows? We'll see.

It would. I stopped in the Dollar General today to see if they had a bread delivery today. They had one on Saturday mid morning and by 1 pm when I walked in it was all GONE. The manager told me next shipment for toilet paper is Thursday. I need a back up big pack .

@porwest I picked up another multi pack yesterday when I filled my car up with gas. This location was an old Neighborhood Walmart and they closed. It was bought by Dollar General. The shelves were almost bare so I said I may as well get a pack since they are now doing limits and it is still flying off the shelf! CRAZY!

@kareng I am going to need some toilet paper soon too. Now I am worried if I toss a pack of toilet paper in my cart people will think I am one of the crazy ones. I'd be like, "No. I REALLY do need it." lol

I haven't been back either but we will need to go toward the end of the week or next week. I may go take a peak in the little mom and pop grocery in town. I haven't been in there in years. I used to go just for the meat until they let that sit until it went bad.

It's crazy. Our little small town has one grocery store that most don't go to since a Dollar General and Family Dollar came to town. I went to the Dollar General yesterday and it was bad. They barely get the store stocked on a regular basis because the workers are mainly high school kids and part time workers. Yesterday they had all the boxes out from last shipment but had not even started stocking shelves. It's going to be bad when next shipment hits Monday or Tuesday.
